Great Japanese French restaurant. If you seek for the same quality in Tokyo, you probably need to pay twice or more….
A must visit place in Sakata, famous for “Sakata-style French” 🙂

It’s French style. Japanese cuts of meat and the vegetables are local Japanese. Beautiful plate presentation. Staff are friendly. Great price for us at 7000 yen for 2 full course(6 dishes served each) plus a glass of wine(1). We had a great time! Staff, again, were so friendly. Cheers

I live in Tokyo and lived in Sakata as a child. Having eaten at many delicious restaurants in Tokyo, I had been hoping to find a restaurant in Sakata with great food, service, and atmosphere, and I was lucky to find one when I visited this time.
The food, the tableware, the overall atmosphere, the service, and the prices show that they put a lot of effort into it.
I fell in love with this restaurant so much that I visited twice with a friend during our four-night stay. Personally, I think it’s the best restaurant in Sakata.

During the three-month closure, the interior was completely renovated.
It now better matches the atmosphere of the food.
The chef’s ingenious approach to dishes breaks down deliciousness into prime numbers and reconstructs them. It’s one surprise after another.

The course continues with onion tofu, black pie, Cube, bouillabaisse, sea bream, Mitsui duck, yogurt, and dacquoise.

The black pie, Cube, bouillabaisse, and dacquoise all hide secrets and deliciousness within. This is how they prepare them. It’s a restaurant well worth traveling to Shonai just for this.

By the way, although the Menu deux website hasn’t been fixed yet, I booked the 11,000 yen (excluding tax) dinner course and had it served for lunch. It’s well worth the price.

For lunch today, I went to Restaurant Nico in Sakata and had the ¥2,750 Petit Course. ♬

First up was the appetizer: croque monsieur (beets, Jinhua ham, and Comté), marinated purple cabbage, and a salad of Shonai vegetables and radishes. The beets were vibrant, but the cream sauce was rich and gentle! The Shonai vegetables were so fresh!

Next, we had homemade bread and a sea bream broth bouillabaisse. It was a simple soup with sea bream broth and saffron flavors, a vegetable stock, and the sweetness of chopped carrots and onions!

For the main course, I had sauteed flounder with tarragon butter sauce, shungiku sauce, and locally sauteed shimeji mushrooms and king oyster mushrooms. The flounder was thick and substantial! The sauce was buttery, but had a gentle flavor, and the flounder was cooked to a fluffy perfection—delicious!

For dessert, we had soybean flour pudding, chocolate crumble, tea cookies, and orange madeleines (I ate the madeleines before I could take a photo).

Wow, all this for just 2,750 yen is amazing! It’s French, but the flavors are mild, and although it uses a fair amount of butter, the ingredients are so fresh that it’s healthy and doesn’t build up in your stomach!

The interior is sophisticated, the cutlery is Cutipol (a lot of trendy places are using this these days (I love it)), and the ceilings are high, creating a very relaxing atmosphere!

If I were to ask if I wanted to go to a famous, long-established French restaurant in Sakata City, I’d honestly say no because the food is old-fashioned and the interior and tableware aren’t particularly new. Also, French restaurants with up-and-coming chefs use ingredients in innovative ways, but the portions are so small that you don’t really feel like you’ve eaten a lot.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant in this area with such great food, interior, service, and prices.

I ordered lunch for 2,300 yen (excluding tax), and the appetizer plate was warm. The morning glory galette was freshly made and warm.

You can choose between fish or meat; the photo shows black sea bream. The butter sauce with tarragon was delicious, and beneath the black sea bream were king oyster mushrooms and shimeji mushrooms, and the surrounding vegetables were also delicious. Of course, the plate was even warmer than the appetizer.

The pumpkin pudding for dessert was delicious, even the caramel was delicious, and the bread was so good that I asked where it was from. When I asked, I was told it was homemade.

I would definitely like to try the more expensive courses and the evening meals next time. They even sell baked goods in the store, and they were authentically delicious. I was amazed to find a store like this in Sakata. The service was also polite and I was impressed. I would like to go again.

When I travel, I usually choose to stay at a hot spring inn, but with the coronavirus pandemic making bathing in a hot spring worrying, I decided to stay at a hotel in Sakata City for the first time instead of Atsumi Onsen and chose this restaurant near the hotel to enjoy Sakata French cuisine.
The service and the refined, delicious course meal exceeded my expectations, even after my prior research.
I was completely satisfied with everything, from the appetizer of Shonai edamame soup to the chef’s masterpiece black clam croquettes.
What’s more, the price was very reasonable.
This is the first time I’ve seen such good value for money since Bon Masuda in Shimizu, Shizuoka Prefecture.
It’s worth the trip here just to enjoy the delicious food.
