Whenever I’m in the eastbay, I make an extra effort to stop at Caravan to get some fresh hot food. Today, I got bolani kachaloo and bolani gandana. The bolani’s are cooked to perfection. You can tell they have a family kitchen and cook authentic food that you would get as if you are visiting someone’s home. They also have the best Afghan groceries, when I am there, I always find something unique and traditional. I bought a thermos today and I’ll use it for making Afghan green tea, which I drink throughout the day at home.

This is hands down one of the best Afghan grocery and restaurants I’ve been to! The food is truly authentic, just like a home-cooked meal. You can tell everything is made with love—the flavors are rich, the ingredients fresh, and every dish is perfectly cooked.
The restaurant is run by a wonderful family—the mother prepares the food, and her sons and father help run the place. Their hospitality is unmatched! Every time I come, they welcome me with warm smiles and great customer service. The restaurant is also very clean and well-kept, making the dining experience even better.

I recently ordered 3 chicken kebabs and, unfortunately, they were not tasty at all — the quality was really poor and disappointing. On top of that, I was shocked to see children being encouraged to ask inappropriate personal questions like “Who’s that person with you always getting the same food?” or “Who is this person?” This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional in any setting, especially in a place that serves food. I hope the management takes this seriously and addresses both the food quality and the behavior of the staff involved.

I have been coming here for two years now. I have been ordering the Qabli Pillow, Chapli plate, chicken kabob plate and both potato and leek variations of bolani regularly in that time.
Everything has always been delicious and I’m always given extra green sauce or a side of yogurt upon request which I appreciate.
It’s a lovely like afghan family running a small grocery outlet of desi goods with a kitchen and halal meat adjacent to grocery area.
My favorite part of coming here is being greeted warmly by the family that runs this place and my absolute favorite is the owner’s younger son Mustafa who is so mature for his age. He offered my 4 year old daughter a lollipop on the first visit and we haven’t stopped coming since. This is from a nine year old boy mind you.
