the pain suisse had a really good texture — the pastry was much chewier and softer than i expected, but the sticky shell was still crisp. i liked the sweet vanilla-y paste, but it wasn’t life changing.
i was disappointed with the nutella babka; it was way to crispy and tasted a bit burnt. there was a glob of hazelnutty, gooey, rich nutella on the top, but other than that, there was not much chocolatiness in the rest of the babka.
the cookie was also a lot crunchier than i expected, and didn’t really have the chewy/gooey center that i prefer in cookies. the whole thing was crunchy and crumbly, and it wasn’t really soft at all. it had a strong caramel-ly, dulche-ish aroma and nutty chunks throughout, but i just didn’t LOVE it.
The kouign Aman is straight up burnt. It’s dark brown and not even breakable. It’s hard on the outside. The real kouign amann is crunchy on the outside and has a golden brown crust and is flaky and buttery on the inside. Pompette’s kouign amann was under baked on the inside.
Butter croissants have no butter taste or scent on the outside or inside. The inside does have pocket holes, but there isn’t any taste to it.
Apple turnover has very little filling in it. It’s described as Apple butter with vanilla bean, but it felt like I was eating another croissant.
Almond croissant was not fresh. It was stale and tasted old.
The banana bread just tasted like sugar and flour. I’m not sure if they used banana puree or an actual banana, but it was below average.
They have a beautiful store, but the cashier had very little customer service.
Just asked, “What do you want?”Anything else?” “Here you go.” Very transactional. Little warmth.
Maybe I ordered the wrong things? Maybe their speciality is something else? I’ve attached photos so you can be the judge.
Staff were lovely and prices are on point.
