If you’re in Lakewood and you have even a drop of a sweet tooth, Gelbstein’s is basically a ניסיונות station. You walk in “just to look,” and two minutes later you’re leaving with a box, a bag, and a third thing you don’t remember agreeing to… because the smell of fresh pastry makes you sign away your free will.
First of all, everything is fresh. Not “fresh-ish.” I mean fresh fresh — like the danishes are still warm and the crumbs are already following you home. The rugelach/danish vibe is top-tier, the pastries are flaky in a way that makes you whisper “וואו” without realizing, and the challah is the kind that turns a regular Shabbos table into a whole simcha.
And it’s not just the classics — they’ve got fun stuff too (those cute cupcakes and seasonal things), so it’s perfect when you need:
a quick treat for the car (aka: “for later”),
something respectable to bring to a vort/Sheva Brachos,
or a Shabbos dessert that looks like you put in effort (בלי עין הרע).
Also, the place has a very heimish, local feel — you’ll bump into half of Lakewood in there, all pretending they’re “only buying one thing.” Sure. We all believe you.
Bottom line: delicious, consistent, and dangerous in the best way.
Highly recommend — just don’t come in hungry unless you’re okay with your wallet doing teshuvah afterward.

Just swung by on chanuka to pick up some donuts. Their selection is absolutely amazing. 20 flavours I think!!! The owner chaim is such a great guy! I loved everything I bought especially the dairy Oreo donut. And during the year their chocolate Danish is a staple

From the moment you walk in you can tell the owner takes pride in his store, in his service, and of course in his food. There’s a great variety of different pastries and breads, but I would have loved to see some more dessert style pastries. Overall a great experience in a great store.

Kosher bakery with fresh and delicious breads and pastries. Onion rolls blew me away. Worth a half hour drive to get again! Rugelach, babkas and classic Jewish baked goods. Brought me back in time in a very good way! Highly recommend!

Wow! Incredible customer service! We had someone pick up our large order for a Shabbos event in upstate New York. The bakery employee mistakenly missed a box when giving our driver the order. Upon realizing, the bakery CALLED US and asked if they could send a driver to bring us the missing box! Unbelievable. In Kew Gardens Hills is where I purchase. Been around since 1934 ? This means that my Grandparents who went to Lakewoods’ Laurel in the Pines, back then, must have also enjoyed Gelbsteins. Well, they did have the Streits as their neighbors !
