When you walk into the restaurant you are greeted by a small waiting room. There are a few tables outside, but for the most part this is an order and take to-go place. That’s not a problem as a lot of barbecue places are similar.
I tried to order cornbread to go with my meal but they were out. Understandable, it happens. I ordered a rib plate with two sides for $16. With the slice of double chocolate cake I ordered, my total bill came to $22. A bit high, but I know a lot goes into the preparation of this kind of food so I was still willing to try it. My boyfriend ordered a pulled pork plate with two sides.
Then, we waited. And waited. The customers in “front” of us seemed displeased with the amount of time it was taking to prepare their orders. After one man received his order he ate one of the ribs in the waiting area and was not impressed. That was my first clue of something awry.
To be honest I didn’t officially track my waiting time, but I know I was there longer than 20 minutes. While I was waiting a group of three people walked inside, saw the prices on the menu, discussed the high prices and walked right back out.
When our food was finally ready, the woman at the front opened the styrofoam box to show us our food. There were three huge ribs in there (slathered with their house sauce) and a decent helping of my two sides, baked beans and mac n’ cheese. There was also a separate box with my cake slice which at first glance looked extremely dry.
After my boyfriend and I got home, we finally tried the food for ourselves. My boyfriend, a huge barbecue fan, could not locate a smoke ring anywhere in his pulled pork or in my ribs. Despite the visible smoker in the parking lot, the meat did not taste smoked at all. I honestly believe we received a lot of sauce on our meat in an attempt to hide this fact. I was not impressed by the texture of the ribs. The ribs weren’t tender, but to be fair weren’t rubbery either. The sauce itself was not terrible, but it was a bit mustardy for my taste. Despite being very hungry before we ordered our food, due to the strong taste of the sauce I wasn’t able to finish my food. The sides alone were okay, but my boyfriend is convinced that the beans were just Bush’s Baked Beans.
Also, the cake did turn out to be super dry. I ate the perimeter of the cake with the frosting, then dumped out the rest. That cake was either old or not baked very well.
Final verdict? For the price, the food was just NOT good enough. We might have been there on an off day, but we have absolutely no incentive to visit again.
