Cafe Yoto is a new, fast casual Japanese restaurant in the North Loop. Born from Shige Furukawa’s high end sushi restaurant, Kado no Mise, sushi chef Yo Hasegawa has created approachable and authentic Japanese cuisine for everyone with noodles, donburi and temaki.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the order was compartmentalized in take out boxes, helping to ensure things didn’t get too soggy while I brought the meal home. The broth was very warm and as mentioned above, a nice treat after a cold walk outside. The tofu had a nice crust and the sauce was delicious, the udon noodles were nice and firm and the beef complimented the broth well.
Overall a great experience and tasty food. 10/10 I will be coming back.
My go to order: SANSAI UDON with House Broth and KARAAGE. That is a lot for one person unless you are super hungry, but the Karaage I usually take half of it home (It reheats super well under the broiler to crisp it up again).
I have also enjoyed KINOKO DONBURI and TEMAKI (Tuna & Salmon), which were great for takeout on one occasion (I added the Karaage for that order and had enough food for two meals).
This place is one of the top restaurants in Minneapolis right now, I hope it stays that way.
Recommendation: I like dining here with a friend or alone, but for the alone times I wish they would have some bar seating at the window or smaller tables (like for 2) so I am not taking up so much space if there are only big tables available.
Very flavorful entrees. Big portions for the bowls and reasonable prices.

Café Yoto is giving modern art exhibit — not restaurant. I paid $20 for what looked like a museum display: two lonely shrimp tempuras, one cube of lemon, and a scoop of rice that looked like it came straight out of a child’s play kitchen.
The place screams “minimalist aesthetic”, but they took it way too literally. The food is so minimal it disappeared. I waited 20 minutes for what could easily fit in the palm of my hand.
North Loop, I love you, but this ain’t it. I left hungrier than when I came in — and spiritually confused.
The menu is a celebration of Japanese street food at its finest, offering everything from perfectly crisp tempura to rich, Niku Ufon, Yakiniku Donburi. Each dish reflects Chef Yo’s deep understanding of flavor balance and technique, with high-quality ingredients shining through in every bite. The temaki Mentaiko Scallop and the Ebi Shoso was a standout—crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful inside, just as it should be.
Service was equally impressive. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the food they were serving, adding to the welcoming and energetic experience.
To top it all off, dessert was a revelation. Created by pastry chef Marc Hue, the sweet offerings provided the perfect finish—a delicate fusion of Japanese tradition with modern artistry. Whether it was the matcha Ispahan Cream Puff and the Matcha Cream Cake, every bite was a masterclass in texture and taste.
Yoto is more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience—a place where Japanese street food is elevated yet remains true to its roots. With a flawless debut, Chef Yo has undoubtedly brought something special to the dining scene. This is a must-visit spot for food lovers, and I can’t wait to return.
