Only comment i would have is add a linen tablecloth please.
The toilets could get an update.
We will be back!
Don’t get me wrong – this was not an absolutely stunning or flawless meal. The beetroot and ricotta starter lacked an extra element to set it off (the crunch of a nut or seed was missed); the main’s pork chop was just a touch overdone; the sea salt in the madeleines’ chocolate sauce was a tiny bit heavy-handed. (At this price point, absolutely nothing to complain about, and I wolfed my food down nonetheless very happily.) Though the service was very efficient (all credit to the team for remaining so), there was a slight sense that they were a little busier than they might ideally be, not helped by the fact there’s probably one-too-many table in the upstairs room. As other reviewers have mentioned, you’re on the edge of feeling like a sardine in a box in here. But if packing in covers helps to make the venture profitable at this price point, I’d be a fool to complain.
So in sum: a 5-star spot without a doubt. If I lived round here this would be a very regular haunt – as it clearly seems to be for many. Next time I’m in the area I will be rushing back here with enthusiasm – if you’re reading this I recommend you do the same!
We started with drinks: nice white wine and French beer. Since one of us is vegetarian, the staff recommended some extra off-menu vegetarian choices. There is not much you can choose from, but overall, it was good.
The restaurant is tiny, but it was super warm and lively, full of customers, and had a super comfy vibe.
The food is amazing, and they are at a reasonable price. I would recommend to give it a try.
The dinner experience offers a wider selection of options compared to lunch and I would definitely recommend dinner given the quality of starters and main courses. They also have a wider selection of wines for dinner compared to lunch.
For the dinner visit, the Crab meat starter was good and the portion size was very decent. The assortment of seafood (scallop with truffle, shrimp, fish etc) was also delicious. The scallop was perfectly cooked – the texture was amazing, soft but not watery and the service temperature was also just right. The tartare was also pretty good and the flavours were balanced although the non-spicy option still felt spicy to me. The roast goose breast was the highlight as the main course. The breast was perfectly cooked – tender, juicy and ping inside and crispy skin outside. The sides and the sauce matched the goose perfectly. The madeleine was just amazing as the desert – the cream, chocolate and madeleine themselves worked together just perfectly and the balance was spot on.
One of the lunch visits was not as great
– some Saturdays they have so-called rugby menus which are no different from the regular menus except 2.5x difference in price. It turns out, they have the hours specified for the rugby lunches on the website. When you book you also see some slots marked as Rugby lunch. There was a hiccup with that visit but the staff offered a good way to correct the hiccup and it has shown that they do care about their customers.
The first lunch experience was great. The menu allows to choose between around 3 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts. The selection of terrines was incredible. It came with a small warm brioche that tasted great. The mains were good but not outstanding in general. The salmon dish was nicely cooked but did not have anything special in it. The liver was pretty nice – it was perfectly cooked (not dry or anything, very tender yet not having any blood) and worked really well with potato puree and peppercorn sauce. Tarte tatin dessert was great too and it worked really well with the cream. The wine selection features only French wines at pretty steep price points compared to what they are really worth. I’d personally prefer a bit richer selection of white wines.
The interior is simple yet nice but the odour removal system was not as efficient – the kitchen starts at the rear part of the dining room so our clothes soaked all the smells. The staff members ate great.
Recommend the white crab meat salad to start! Loved the complementary canelés and black olive white chocolate shards that came with our desserts – first time I have tried both things and they were delicious.
The restaurant is cosy but service was attentive and quick.
Recommended and will definitely return… I feel lucky to live only 15 mins walk away 🙂
