My wife and I did not go with the full family style meal, but this is the most popular, especially on the weekend where they add prime rib to the entree selections. We split a 3-piece fried chicken meal, which, to start, came with cabbage coleslaw, white bread, fruit bread, whipped butter, and raspberry spread. The meal itself comes with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy. We added the sauteed squash and butter noodles on the side. The entire meal was the perfect amount for two and it was delicious.
Kate was our server and she was a real delight for us while dining. She was courteous, friendly, warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, attentive, responsive, gave great suggestions, and even let us know we could eat off of the lunch menu (which we didn’t even know existed).
We even got to take a picture with Zehnder the Chicken!
It was great overall experience and if you are ever in Frankenmuth, MI, make sure to stop by Zehnder’s for some great food, service, and overall dining experience!
That being said… other than the chicken, the food kinda let us down this visit. I used to come here all the time growing up and I remember the food quality being a lot better.
My wife ordered the Portobello Ravioli, and it honestly tasted like it had been sitting under the heat lamp too long. The pasta was doughy and undercooked, didn’t taste right, and the bread was super hard and stale. Thankfully, Steph took care of it and brought out a new one — and it was WAY better, almost like a completely different dish.
I ordered the half chicken dinner. The chicken was fantastic, and the broccoli was great — but they forgot the potatoes. They eventually brought some out, but for what we pay at a place like this, the potatoes were a major disappointment. Super bland, no flavour, and honestly tasted like cheap frozen home fries. For the price, I would’ve much preferred mashed or roasted potatoes instead of something that felt like an afterthought.
Definitely worth trying for the chicken alone, but overall, we just weren’t blown away this visit.

Well…if you want a lunch that features fried chicken but you don’t want the all-you-can-eat experience, come to Zehnder’s.
Zehnder’s is of course across the street from Bavarian Inn right by the Holzbruke over the Cass River and it’s hard to miss. The building and restaurant is well kept and has the appearance of an old tavern or roadside inn, especially on the inside. I love the more formal table setting in this restaurant as well as how attentive the wait staff are. The server assigned to my area answered my questions and did well in keeping my table serviced.
Their menu is a mix of German fare, American dining cuisine and of course their fried chicken (with their special seasoning blend). Tableside, they serve a couple different breads; white bread and stollen. The stollen was very good; not overly sweet but has a good fruity taste. The big winner is the raspberry preserve they serve with the bread; it’s that delicious.
Also, they have their own house beer (brewed by Wolverine Brewing), of which I had their red ale which I enjoyed and the price for a pint was rather decent. Sadly the only way to get it to go is by growler…and I came from too far to fill a growlers.
As mentioned, I had their lunch fried chicken dinner (3 pieces), which is served with mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and slaw. It is also served with a noodle soup, which while light, works well as a first course. The fried chicken was nice and crispy and I did enjoy the seasoning used (fun tip: if you’re nostalgic for the original version of the seasoning with MSG, they sell that in their shops downstairs). Only critique is the chicken pieces are little smaller than I expected; however, if these are from sustainable farming, I can understand that. The mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy were also very good though the standout was the slaw. The slaw reminded me of the slaw my grandmother used to make (being of Germanic decent, might make sense); very creamy and refreshing. Definitely something I would have wanted more of had I had a cooler to take a quart to go.
While I didn’t sit in the bar, the bar area also looked very nice and felt as close to an old tavern as you can get.
While I cannot say which of the two big places is better, Zehnder’s is definitely a great place to eat in Frankenmuth.
The staff were very helpful, especially when explaining ingredients since I’m lactose intolerant. Our waitress was fantastic the entire time, quickly checking in, refilling drinks, and bringing out our food. I ordered the sausage meal, and it was excellent. Definitely recommend!
Seasonal spiced cider a nice touch – avail and spiked or non-alcoholic.
Great meal for a good price in a relaxing environment.
