San Diego’s favorite soul food has a new location- Ali’s Chicken & Waffles is now open in Downtown San Diego. From it’s beginnings in the back counter of Donut Star, Ali’s Chicken and Waffles is bringing the same flavor that the city has grown to love to their new spot, serving a halal rendition of the famous pairing alongside shrimp and grits, fried chicken sandwiches, and more. Ali, the Ethiopia-born entrepreneur recalls the impression waffles made on him as a young immigrant first arriving in a San Diego school. By the time he earned a business degree from San Diego State, he and a friend decided to launch the Ali’s Chicken brand. His chicken is seasoned in a blend of three flours, with a spicy option heated by Thai chilis.

For the building, the dining area inside was clean, and the bathroom even had a bidet!
The burritos were massive—especially for the price and they didn’t skimp in the crispy beef bacon. While we were dining, a group of workers came in to order lunch (always a good sign). The interior is humble, but the offerings are absolutely something to write home about. The tea was so good we ordered two more to go for our walk around the downtown area and were very grateful to receive them free of charge with well wishes for the rest of our trip.
We do plan to come back to San Diego, and this will be somewhere we return!
Had 3 sandwiches and collard greens. Review:
The 1st sandwich was the spicy chicken sandwich. It had very good flavor and hot out of the grease so it was fresh, tender and juicy. The second sandwich was the chicken and waffles. It had great flavor and with the help of Smucker’s syrup they added on the side. The last sandwich was the original chicken. It was good also. The best was the spicy sandwich.
I was disappointed in the collard greens. Had very little flavor and the bacon strip in the greens was undercooked. Didn’t want to risk the chance of getting Trichinosis from a parasite if the pig was infected. My collard green recipe would blow the green off of these collards.
The service was great and the atmosphere decor bland.
I tried once and probably wouldnt try again as there are so many choices in san diego.
