Cheerful and bustling spot in a giant downstairs room with big savory sharing plates placed on turntables atop round tables. Casually tasty and relaxed happy vibes. Mix of authentic flavors and dishes alongside crowd favorites. Solid beer or wine, or a pina colada in a can. Get a reservation!

In Montreal.. kinda hard-to find.. but hole in the wall type of place.. ordered a spicy chicken and fried rice chicken. Service was fast but kinda rude… food was fresh made and delicious… little too salty but was good…. chicken was tender and flavorful with hot heavy spice.. delicious… vegi rolls sucked .. not fresh but microwaved…..prices were reasonable.. parking kinds sucked .. will come back if in the area.. try other dishes..

BEWARE: TERRIBLE SERVICE AND VERY RUDE STAFF! STAY AWAY IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE RIDICULED.

In my experience, the server was greedy for tips and did not care at all about customer experience or basic human respect. Secondly, he did not honor the offer that was very boldly advertised on every table.

Here’s the story: I went in today, few hours before a flight to grab a take-away box of noodles. As I was already sitting at a table waiting for food, i changed my mind and decided to eat some of it on the premises while they were still hot before being exposed to the freezing cold outside.

So I asked for a fork to which the medium height server with medium length blond-ish hair said he already put one in the bag. As I was opening the bag, he asked if I was gonna eat there. I responded that I will eat some there and take the rest away and asked if that was okay. He said ‘not really because you ordered take-away’ so I asked if the prices were different to which he said no. Then he went on to say ‘now you must clean all the table once you’re done, I will give you the cloth’.

I always clean the table after me and gather all plates so this wasn’t something I wouldn’t have done anyway but this verbalization from the server was unexpected and rude. I did not engage further and started eating my food.

Then I saw a placard on the table saying that if you post a photo of the food on Google, the restaurant will provide a free coke. So I thought there is still a chance for this restaurant to redeem itself and posted a photo. Then I showed the server the post and asked for a Coke Zero. He said it’s only for dine-in.

I wasn’t sure why he was insistent on me being a takeaway customer other than the fact that he wanted to be tipped. Even though technically I was dining in, just out of a take away box instead of serving plates which is significantly less work for a server.

So I responded that the advertisement doesn’t specify anything as to the nature of transaction to which he said I am not going to give it to you so you don’t have to post it.

After this encounter, I ate half the box, packed the rest and did not clean the table of my payment receipt and any food pieces thinking that if they do not want to serve me and comply with their advertised offers, I had no compulsion to clean any tables which is not a customers job anyway and only a good social practice.

Once he saw me packing away, he signaled at me with his hand to stop but I did not and proceeded to climb the stairs out- at this point he collected the items from my table and threw them at me. I did not look back and continued to walk away to proceed with my day!

Such pathetic server attitude brings a bad name to professional servers who actually ensure a good customer experience and are worthy of tips.

We came here as a group of 11 to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time because the place is small and gets really busy. The food was amazing and the staff were super accommodating.

One of the best Chinese restaurants thus far. Great flavours and spice, just too much salt. The salt and pepper squid and the pork eggplant were huge hits. The restaurant is down a few flights of stairs, hence not the most accessible. But they have a few high chairs.

We will definitely return.

Really wanted to rate this a five star but dishes that were supposed to have spicy peppers had none. No level of spice in a restaurant that is supposed to specialize in Hunan or Schezuan cuisine. Food was tasty but just now what I was expecting. Maybe it is served to a level of heat suited for Montreal taste?

Montreal’s Chinatown offers a variety of dining options, but this restaurant is sadly my least favourite. They focus heavily on deep-fried dishes – if that’s your vibe, you might enjoy it, as some have praised their offerings.

However, our experience was less than stellar. The beef dish was drowned in soy sauce and quite salty. Throughout our meal, the staff never checked on us; they lingered around the cashier area, chatting rather than attending to diners. It lacked the attentiveness you’d expect in a dining experience.

I would avoid this restaurant and instead try Fung Shing (small Mum ‘n’ Pa Chinese restaurant) around the corner. If Japanese tonkatsu floats your boat, Hoshi a block away.

Chez Chili is a gem tucked into Montreal’s vibrant Chinatown, and it delivered a delicious, satisfying meal that left our group smiling. We ordered General Tso Chicken, chicken sautéed in spicy sauce, and chicken fried rice—and each dish brought bold flavors and generous portions (right quantity for 2 couples). The General Tso was crispy and tangy with just the right kick, while the spicy sautéed chicken had a deep, warming heat that built beautifully with each bite. The fried rice was fragrant, well-seasoned, and packed with tender chicken—comfort food done right.

The ambiance was lively yet relaxed, and service was prompt and friendly despite the busy lunch rush. The menu is extensive, and it’s clear they know their way around spice and texture.

One small hiccup: some chicken dishes were only available bone-in, and the kitchen couldn’t accommodate a boneless version. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but something to note if you prefer boneless options.

Overall, Chez Chili is a fantastic spot for flavorful Chinese cuisine with a kick. We’d happily return—and next time, we might explore more of their noodle and veggie dishes too!

Forgot to take pics of individual dishes.

Absolutely delicious food; it’s alwayssssss consistently amazing. Lots of vegan options too! My fave is the wood ear mushroom spicy salad & the potato, eggplant and peppers but you can’t go wrong with anything. Best Chinese resto in the city!

Overall great Chinese food – some of the best I have ever had.
We ordered a few plates to share – General Tao’s Chicken, Beef and Brocolli, Spicy Chicken, Vegetable Noodles, and Vegetable Fried Rice.
The only issue was that the spicy chicken was not at all spicy. It had chili peppers served with the dish, but the chicken itself was not spicy.
