I cannot believe it has taken me this long to finally get here. When I lived in STL, I had a SOTS close to my home and I dined there on the regular. Even though I am thrilled to have one on the IL side of the river, it’s a half hour drive to enjoy.
The other day I was running errands and shopping in Edwardsville. I made it a point to do it around the lunch hour, so I could enjoy an calzone. I ordered at the counter as you do and lucky for me, the cashier was patient with me. As I ordered, I kept reading the menu and changed my mind two times and finally stayed with my third choice. Having a love of jalapeños, Pancho Villa was my final choice.
Pancho Villa not only gave my fresh jalapeños, it was also filled with red peppers, smoked cheddar, Mozzarella and the meat was Chorizo prepared in Smoked Chili Oil. Yum-Yum and no heartburn. For dipping or spreading on top, I was given a cup of Queso.
One nice thing about SOTS, is they offer adult beverages. They have an excellent selection of local craft beers and wines to pair with your calzone. I paired mine with, Pale Ale from Schlafly.
The dining room is clean and crisp. It’s done in an industrial style. They have regular tables and a few hightop tables, so you can choose which one is best for you. On the tables you’ll find linen napkins with reusable flatware.
If you can eat an entire calzone, I am impressed. For those of us who cannot, next to the soda machine is a stack of eco-friendly to-go boxes to put your leftovers in, to take home.

This was a good little sit-down for a pretty quick dinner. The wife had a salad and I had the meat me in Saint Louis, the wife enjoyed her Italian salad and my calzone was delicious I highly recommend giving this place a try, it wasn’t very busy for the quality of food they put out. I’ll definitely be back for my next calzone craving. The staff was great bldg was well kept and service was great!

I tried the Figgy Piggy and thought it was decent. Nothing about it stood out to give me a wow factor. The combination sounded so good and I was excited to try it having never been here (actually I had never been to any Sauce on the Side). Maybe my expectations are too high but I expected at least a little wow factor since all they serve is calzones.
The register attendant was nice enough but I noticed that no one shouted out a greeting when new patrons entered and they were not very busy. Just a casual “Hi, welcome to Sauce on the Side” would’ve made the atmosphere feel more welcoming.

Best calzone I’ve had. This isn’t a folded pizza with a crust I need a chainsaw to get through. It’s a great meal you need to experience to appreciate. I think the prices are reasonable for a good meal I can’t get anywhere else. The staff are always friendly and helpful too.

Wow! First time here and zero regrets. Going again tomorrow. Service was so fun and so helpful. Pretty affordable and portions are sizeable. They said you can customize anything. It was made to order, so it was hot and fresh.
Update: Back again. If you do anything smart and joyful today, let it be Sauce on the Side baby. Never has let me down. Ordered on the app and it was ready for pick up right after my yoga class. Perfect end to a perfect day. See last photo. I know you wish you were me. ♥️ 2/26/25

Food was delicious. I got the featured calzone of the month. It was some kind of a hot chicken canzone. Way too sweet for me. Tasted more like a dessert. However it was flavorful and delicous. They did not have regular ranch. How do you have “sauce” in the name of your Midwestern restaurant without offering ranch? Second issue, my kid got the spicy ranch because that was his only option. He needed more “sauce”. $1.50 for extra. Wow. They give you a mcdonalds size sauce to go with your giant $15 calzone. Not enough suauce. If the original portion of sauce was enough for the whole calzone I would have no issue. Don’t give me a giant calzone and hardly any sauce and charge extra for it. So to sum it up food was great, but I would hesitate going back.

This place is so amazingly awesome. I’ve never had anything where I thought, this isn’t very good. I’ve tried almost the entire menu (dave for vegetable filled itmes) and several monthly specials and they’re always good…..that’s why I keep going back. I had the Bin Daddy last visit (Jordan Binnington’s take on the calzone) and was impressed. DO NOT plan on kissing your significant other, however, as it has a ton of garlic. I always look forward to going here.

I have been hearing about this place for years finally they came to the Illinois side so I decided to give them a try and while I was impressed. I like the system that they have. The food was really good that was made fresh to order. They have wine and beer mostly local which I like. They have salads really nice salads as well. Really cool clean environment. Just tried for the first time and it was fantastic. Dining out alone is usually kinda uncomfortable but here I actually enjoyed sitting alone at the bar. The food was out before my beer was halfway gone which is saying a lot considering how busy they were. My meat me in St. Louis calzone was delicious and large enough that once I was full I had plenty for lunch the next day. Service was great. Employees and management were very attentive, warm and welcoming. It was a little loud (literally my only qualm). Overall it was an awesome dining experience and I highly recommend for lone diners or treating family and friends.

Unless you are done eating, DO NOT get up from your table. My wife and I both got up to go to the restroom and my wife was done first. She told me that when she got back to the table, it had been cleared off. Neither one of us were done eating and I still had half a beer left to drink. Wife said her salad was ok, but she asked for no red onions and found such. Apparently whoever took the order doesn’t know how to put a hold on the salad saying no red onions. Or the person making the order doesn’t know how to read. Was our first time there and will be the last.
