The ‘Rainforest Cafe’ of Mexican restaurants, if you’re into that vibe. Am I in Miami? Atlanta? Houston? Dunno, but it’s an escape from New Orleans, if that was your intent. This is the type of chain that could become quite popular in major cities across the U.S., like a Mexican Cheesecake Factory, a restaurant designed for Instagram. The vibe is LOUD, like shake your table loud, and then, all of a sudden, it gets super loud for an extended remix of the Happy Birthday theme, in English, then again in Spanish. This could happen more than a few times, depending on how many b-day celebrations are in the house. Then, the occasional Anniversary celebration with ‘Dancing in the Dark’ and who knows how many other theme songs are cued up for special events. The service is very attentive and friendly. The drinks are creatively crafted and presented, each in their own special glass, ceramic or other container. The food is pretty decent although some menu items are quite pricey. This is the type of restaurant I would typically avoid, particularly in a culinary city like NOLA, but it’s hugely popular, especially with Latinos as there’s always a line of folks waiting. It may be just the type of place you’re attracted to.

Everything was amazing. Carlos is amazing helped me pick out something I totally loved. The oyster Rockefeller soooo good. Oysters cooked right. Perfect and flavorful. The trompo al pastor loved the fresh pineapple. Definitely would go again.

Tacos del Cartel is an amazing place that truly shouts top-notch quality across the board. The service was excellent, the drinks are awesome, and the tacos are fantastic!
I had the Short Ribs for an appetizer and the Tendedero de Birria, and I can tell you these are both incredible. The Short Ribs are one of a kind – they are served on a soft, thick shell with the meat and short rib on top, and the flavor is simply amazing. As for the Birria, the presentation is a showstopper: the tacos are served on a literal cloth line!
The interior of the place is also very artsy and cool – there’s a 3D model of a panther on the wall that adds to the unique vibe.
A helpful tip: be ready for an interactive meal with the Tendedero. They give you rice, mashed beans, and onion on the side, along with a rich consommé (the dipping broth) for you to take the tacos from the cloth line and prep them yourself. For incredible food, presentation, and service, this place is a must-visit.

The atmosphere and staff here is superb!! Jessica was amazing guiding us on our first Cartel experience. Happy Hour Tuesday is a must, as the featured taco dishes are great and easy on your wallet. Chris was awesome as well. Try them out and you won’t regret it!! Love it!!

Great vibe, great food!

A few of us stopped in for dinner an a whim and man was this a good choice. Very unique entrees with the clothesline tacos, rotisserie chicken machine (so fun!) and the dessert cart for a build-your-own dessert to end the trip.

Three of us went and we had various taco dishes:, t
The shrimp tacos, the fish tacos, and the steak tacos. The tacos are pretty darn good. Not the largest portions, although I understand that most street tacos are not really large anyhow. They were cooked well and tasty.

The service was so so. Friendly, but pretty slow. It took a while to get our cocktails and they kept trying to give us dishes that weren’t ours so they’re just a little bit off kilter.

The restaurant is decorated in a colorful way. They have these crazy menus that light up like Kindles.
I would go back. The food was good and the atmosphere is nice and the service was friendly, if just a little slow.

The food was absolutely amazing and presented beautifully. However the best part of our meal was our server Chipo. She was so kind and patient and attentive. She came back many times to check on us and we had some really nice conversations. I would come back here just to have her as my server again. She made the night. The happy hour specials were delicious and a great deal. Make sure you try the birrias. Make sure you request Chipo when you come!
