Between Dallas and Austin the food choices are slim, lots of just ok. But today BINGO!
We were cruising through Temple and looking for a spot that was good quick and welcoming A Taste of Texas Family Food is a now a mandatory pitstop.
The star of the show here is undeniably the catfish. Achieving that perfect balance is a culinary tightrope walk, but they nail it: the breading is outstandingly crisp without being weighed down by oil. It’s rare to find fried fish this clean—you get all the crunch and none of the “greasy after-effect” that usually follows a Southern meal.

I wish I heard about this place sooner! The food is all made from scratch and the staff/owners treat everyone like family. You can tell when your meal is cooked by people who genuinely love making people happy with food and this place is legit. My husband had the garlic buffalo wings and loved them. They were HUGE wings and the homemade sauce was amazing. He had the pinto beans and Mac n cheese on the side and said the pinto beans were the best beans he’s ever had in a restaurant.
My chicken fried steak was very good but my favorite part was that they had pan gravy and not the standard plain gravy mix so many places serve. The potato salad was perfect and the okra was delicious thanks to their seasoning. We can’t wait to go back to this place.

If you’re looking for real-deal soul food made with love, this is the spot! I ordered the catfish dinner plate with two sides and the meatloaf special (don’t judge me ) — and baby, EVERYTHING was hot, fresh, and seasoned just right. The catfish was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and that meatloaf? Comfort food done right.
But honestly… the food was amazing, AND the customer service was 10/10. Super friendly, welcoming, and made you feel like family the moment you walked in. You can tell this is a true mom & pop place that takes pride in what they serve.

This place is spectacular! I didn’t know I was missing out on this spot. From the moment we walked in the young lady behind the counter came and explained everything to us even let us know about the Specials they have for the day. She was very friendly and the right person you would to help serve you when in the establishment. Kuddos to that young lady! Now the food, when I tell you it took me back to my grandma cooking on Sundays it was amazing. The neck bones were tender and moist, the yams were delicious, the cabbage was perfect, the rice and gravy was delicious as well, the pound cake was moist and perfect to top it off, that lemonade they have is a must try it was so good. THIS PLACE IS A MUST TRY YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IN ANYTHING. I’ve already planned to go back this weekend and help myself to some of that GOOD SOUTHERN SOUL FOOD!

First time going and from the atmosphere to the rest of our visit it was a great vibe. The staff is very friendly,food was AMAZING and I will definitely be back. All drink choices are top tier especially that lemonade,got kool aid to go which is definitely a must. They do change their daily specials so definitely make sure to check them out online. It was definitely worth every penny and very affordable prices,clean inside and out as well.

We found this place on Google. The reviews did not disappoint. Oh yes, we will definitely be returning to this family establishment. The food and service was great.
The owners walk around and often check on you. They really make you feel welcome.
Be prepared to wait for a little bit because most of the meals are cooked to order outside of the daily specials. *Served very fresh and hot.

We have discovered one of our new absolute go-to spots in Temple. I spent almost the entire drive back home calling friends and telling them all about how wonderfully delicious the food is here.
The crew working is amazing – we were treated with family friendliness that you simply do not find in other places.
Have I mentioned how crazy good the food is? We had the catfish (possibly the best I have ever had in a restaurant) and the CFS easily ranks in my Top 5 (maybe top 3???) – it is sooooo tender and crispy, I was simply shocked at how truly delicious it was.
The food is served in to-go containers, as many have mentioned, but for me that just added to the delightfulness of the meal (plus it was handy because we were not able to finish all of our meals).
So, in case I forgot to tell you – the food is just spot on perfect! The green beans had amazing flavor and the okra… just oh my goodness… yeah… it is that good.
One thing that I realized on the way home, as I was thinking back on each delightful bite, was that, unlike several other similar places I have enjoyed in the past, there is not an over abundance of salt… I didn’t need to add any, but so often the case is the food is overly salted. Not here — everything was seasoned perfectly.
You simply can not go wrong when you choose to experience this dining event. Trust me… go and enjoy and then return again with more people that will be so excited for you to turn them on to this great little treasure in Temple.

I went here on the recommendation of a stranger when asked what was their favorite place in town, A TASTE OF TEXAS was the first thing out her mouth. The food did not disappoint. I had the pork neck bones with greens and sweet potato yams. Nothing makes me happier when I walk into a place and I am greeted by the workers. They recognized that I was a new face and explained the menu and made suggestions. Depending on time of day you may have to wait for your food to be prepared fresh. They do have a seating area for dining in and enjoying your meal while hot.

Great food, great people. Our first time and they were really helpful as to how it works. You walk in and order at the counter and your food is served in a to go fashion. There is sitting available and they let us sit and order then told us how it usually is. Food came out relatively quick and was really good. I ordered the chicken fried steak and wife had meatloaf, sis had fried catfish. Everyone liked their food! I will definitely be back.

We were greeted as we came in the door and helped to know how the menu worked. On top of that, the person taking our order was super helpful too.
The food is better than anything I could imagine. So full of flavor, tender, seasoned well, and perfectly cooked in every way.
We would have pictures, but we dug in too fast to take them.
The owners and employees obviously take great pride in serving incredible food and taking care of their customers.
