Today I ate at the Oelwein Family Restaurant and ordered just hash browns with extra toppings. The food was so hot and fresh and very good/tasty. Actually, it was better than some of the larger restaurants we have where I live. I highly recommend anyone who wants a “family” style restaurant to eat there.

New Ownership is making this place shine. Soup and ranch is homemade along with many of their dishes. Everything is fresh and consistent. All you can eat Chicken and Fish Specials are 10/10. Best prices and quality in town.

I used to come to this place when I was younger. It was called country cottage. The waitresses were amazing and taft here and just we’re great at their jobs.
It was my first time going to since then cause I no longer live in that town. My parents still go usually about one sunday a month. They seem to like it. The food was good. The service was a little slow. It’s just not the same, so I have to rate it a three.

Drove an hour to go on a date with this girl from Oelwein.
Driving up into town and parking in the parking lot, it’s immediately got that ‘run down/on the verge of bankruptcy’ vibe.
I entered and saw the open floor plan, every one inside was above the age of 60. Presumably customers who grew up on this diner (back when it was good). The booths were dingy and stains on the walls/carpet.
I ordered a 10 oz Sirloin Medium style. Came with a side of mashed potatoes.
My steak tasted like saw dust and plastic, I couldn’t even finish it.
I took one bite of my mashed potatoes and couldn’t even swallow it. My best guess is they microwaved both my steak and mashed potatoes.
I fr fr drove an hour to eat some of the worst food I’ve had in the last 6 years.
On the upside, my date gave me a tour of Oelwein. I implore all citizens of Oelwein and all travelers to let this Family Diner die. If you are unfortunate enough to live in Oelwein, save your money and move to a town that isn’t actively dying.

We’re traveling the country and like to support local businesses in the area. We just happened upon this restaurant and wanted to give it a try. Boy, are we glad we did! The breakfast meals were DELICIOUS, and the prices were reasonable also. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful. We will definitely come back if we’re in this area!
