This was our first time dining at Mayahuel, and overall it was a beautiful experience. We ordered the Chef’s Special tasting menu, and everything was absolutely delicious. The drinks were amazing each one felt like a little journey and every dish we tried was full of flavor and thoughtfully prepared. Everything felt impeccable.

The service was great, the ambiance was perfect, and the restaurant itself is very comfortable. The soft colors and the unique scent of the space really stand out,it plays with your senses and truly transports you to Mexico. As Mexicans, several dishes brought back childhood memories, which made the experience even more special for us.

The only thing that made me a bit sad was that we came all the way from The Woodlands to celebrate my birthday, and although it was noted by the hostess after we mentioned it, it wasn’t acknowledged afterward, no birthday wishes or dessert. That was a small disappointment.

Aside from that, we had a wonderful time and would definitely come back. Highly recommended.

Ambiance of this place is fantastic. But I think the food needs some work. It’s clear to me they are trying to be upscale Mexican? Which is super hard to pull off.

I got the ceviche, blue tuna, croquets, the short rib, seafood tacos.

I don’t think the food was good enough to justify the cost. Two small tacos for more then $20 is too much.

The short rib was not large enough and imo not the melt in your mouth you would expect from a short rib for this price.

The food time is also incredibly long. 2-3 hrs…..

I honestly think the only thing worth that was priced appropriately and tasted really good was the ceviche.

The blue tuna was not the freshest and for $26, it should be top nagiri / sashimi grade.

Wonderful dining experience. A tasty adventure filled with culinary delights in every bite. The dishes were creative and beautifully presented. They provided a complimentary amuse bouche. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. Their chocolate desert is a must try. I would pass on the steak since it was not as tender, and order the short rib in the future

Wow wow. I was reticent heading into our Friday night reservation because I had heard mixed reviews both from friends and the internet, but we absolutely loved our whole experience at Mayahuel.

It had been on my to do list for a minute because we were in Mexico City in January and loved the food. Upon arrival we were taken straight to our table in view of the open kitchen. The restaurant itself is sleek modern and, if I’m being picky, just a *little* too bright inside. It also smelled amazing.
Our waiter was friendly and helpful with recommendations throughout the evening and I felt like he checked in on us an appropriate amount without being overbearing. After placing and receiving our cocktail order, we placed our whole dinner order in one go which he said he would make sure was coursed out, and it was paced beautifully.

To start we ordered the mushroom tacos, hamachi Aguachile and pork belly tacos. I often feel like pork belly leans too fatty but I loved this dish. The mole and the beans were a perfect balance to the pork.

For dinner we shared the carne asada, cochinita and roast chicken. Everything was really delicious but I think the consensus on favorite dish was the cochinita. Though the roasted onion puree that came with the carne asada was also dynamite.

For dessert we ordered the cacao which I intended to abstain from because it had mango, and I unfortunately have a mango allergy but when the chef brought the dessert to the table he brought me a side dessert sans mango. It was completely unnecessary and so nice/thoughtful.

We have only been here once so I can’t speak to consistency but we had such a great dinner that we will absolutely be back.

Mayahuel – Lunch
$8 valet parking.

The ocelotl cocktail was very good. An old fashioned with mezcal as its base. Awesome big single cube of crystal clear ice.

A thickened tortilla soup, thickened with? Onions? Masa? Cornstarch/flour? Probably masa. Good flavor. Nothing overwhelming or one note. Perfectly accepable. For my personal taste, I would not order it again as just too thick a gravy for my personal preference. But that’s just me. Nothing wrong with it.

Guacamole was good. Well prepared. I’d probably remove the cilantro microgreens next time before eating it. Good, thicker totopos. Small serving for the price. They could consider doubling the portion size, consider it as a loss leader, to get diners talking about it. Since typically it is one of the first things that is brought to the table..

Quesadillas get an “acceptable” rating. Within the spectrum of quesadillas recipes but I would have enjoyed, personal taste, less greasy tortillitas. Lovely presentation.

Noisy sound system. Restaurants don’t really need to blast music. It interferes with conversations. Just adds overall noise level. IMHO. Not sure how loud they keep it when restaurant is full.

Chicken milanesa was good. On a bed of black beans with verdolaga on top. Nice crunch. Nice seasonings. Enjoyable. Chicken breast is correct for milanesa. I personally am not a fan of dark meat, but many people feel that a boneless skinless chicken thigh is juicier and more tender (as opposed to the chicken breast that was used for this milanesa). So if the restaurant gets responses from others about the chicken breast being dry, they might consider switching to the juiceier boneless and skinless chicken thigh for this entrée.

Tried the flan. Can skip the flan; try a different dessert instead. Small portion. Some sort of burned something topping it.

I’m glad that I came today. An opportunity to try a place that was really off my radar because of cost. (No need to come back right away until I’ve tried more untried restaurants in Houston in 2026. In other words, good but no “I can’t wait to dine here again” moments.)

Just too many places on my list to try.

Really nice staff. So friendly. They really contributed to the lunch experience.

Update. Late evening/next day. Doggie bagged the quesadillas and chicken to take home. Did not hold up after refrigeration. Quesadillas couldn’t be brought back to edible and were tossed in trash. Chicken chopped and chicken salad made.

Title: Tons of Potential

My wife and I had a 7:30 p.m. Saturday reservation and were excited to try Mayahuel, given our experiences dining in Mexico City and at modern Mexican restaurants in Houston. We arrived on time and chose valet due to the cold, but were oddly redirected to a garage valet around the corner. I dropped my wife at the door and walked back in the cold, which set an awkward tone from the start.

At the host stand, my wife was told our table wasn’t ready, so we waited at the bar. We ordered a mezcal flight, which was excellent. Each mezcal was distinct, with the Illegal Reposado standing out as light and smooth. The bar area was beautiful, from the textured cactus-like wall to a bouquet of dried corn. What we expected to be a brief wait turned into 30 minutes past our reservation time, though the drinks softened the frustration.

We were finally seated at 8:00 p.m. and carried our own drinks to the table. After sitting for another 5–10 minutes, our waiter greeted us. I noticed immediately that the tabletop was uneven and damaged. We were served small masa-based dumpling-like bites, which we initially thought were a gesture for the delay, but soon saw they were standard for all tables.

The waiter explained they take the full order at once. Based on his recommendation, my wife ordered the Short Rib Barbacoa—described as “so moist you can eat it with a spoon”—and I chose the Cod. For starters, we ordered the Avocado & Sikil P’aak and shrimp tacos. The dip improved once mixed and was nicely presented with tortilla chips standing upright in uncooked beans. The shrimp tacos had good flavor but the shrimp were overcooked and lacked texture.

My wife ordered an Ocelotl cocktail, which took about 15 minutes to arrive after a reminder to another server. It was pleasant but masked the mezcal, tasting more like gin. When our entrees arrived, they looked stunning. Unfortunately, the Cod was overcooked and the rice undercooked. The flavors were good, but the textures missed the mark. The Short Rib Barbacoa also fell short of expectations. It does require a knife to be cut, but the sweet potato purée was outstanding.

Late into the meal, the waiter realized I had never been offered water. I had ordered an Acahual cocktail in anticipation of delays; when it arrived, it tasted diluted and lacked depth.

Dessert was the highlight. Despite some confusion that required us to reorder it, the Cacao dessert was excellent; balanced, textured, and memorable.

Our bill exceeded $300, and we again walked to the off-site valet in the cold. While the mezcal flight, sweet potato purée, and dessert stood out, the evening was marked by long waits, inconsistent service, overcooked food, and logistical hiccups. Mayahuel is still new, and there is clearly tons of potential, enough that we might consider giving it another chance.

I had an incredible experience at Mayahuel. The atmosphere was amazing — from the moment we walked in, the architecture and interior design truly captured the beauty of Mexico in such an elegant way. The food was absolutely exquisite, with traditional Mexican dishes and authentic ingredients that highlighted real, rich flavors.
The staff was exceptional and made us feel so welcome. The bartenders were just as impressive — not only did they craft incredible drinks, but they also shared great insights about mezcal and tequila.
Overall, an unforgettable dining experience. I can’t wait to go back!

I had higher hopes for Mayahuel with all the hype around it and even someone who has visited Mexico City and had almost the same type of food. Mind you we do not have any entrees, we tried a variety of tacos, had a couple cocktails and dessert. I give it a 4/5 only because I’ve had better/tastier “boujee” tacos for half the price.

The cocktails were delicious and worth it and the dessert too. The Cacao was recommended as our server told us that’s what Chef Luis is known for so we went with his suggestion. Pretty unique and delicious so the drinks and dessert get 5 stars but like I said in the beginning – had higher hopes for the food/tacos to be more mind blowing especially for the price point. Might come back to try the entrees.

It’s definitely an elevated experience, not for the casual catch up. The staff was really friendly and patient with our big group. I wish they had a few more options for brunch but what they had was delicious. The matcha latte was great!
