My first time to Kuba Kuba after hearing about it months ago. Went in for brunch and started with the Cortadito (espresso and milk) then ordered the huevos rancheros. I really enjoyed the Cuban take on this classic. The bread was noticeably wonderful, eggs cooked perfectly. Everything about the dish was fresh, hot and so tasty! Certainly a fair serving! That bowl / dish is deceiving deep (in a great way)!
Wait staff were pleasant, attentive and the food quickly and thoughtfully prepared / served. Loved the atmosphere, music and decor.
Throughout the meal we talked about our plans to return for lunch or dinner and continually referenced wonderful specials and huge menu. I’m so looking forward to it! I strongly recommend Kuba Kuba.

Wonderful restaurant. In a great neighborhood. The food smelled great before it headed to the table and it did not disappoint when it got to the table. Fabulous! The Service wonderful, east going and perfect date night evening. Can not say enough good things about this place. Even the music was on point.

Authentic cuban food that tastes delicious! We go there often! I love the Lunch roasted pork special! It is scrumptious and they have a Rana sauce that adds just the right amount of spice to the dish! The cuban music and decor adds to the dining experience. The wait staff is on the ball! They know when you need them and when to not hover! Great to go on a date night or with a party of up to 6 or 8 people! Manny, the owner, if he is there, adds to the wonderful atmosphere! It’s a MUST if you are visiting Richmond! If you live here and haven’t been to Kuba Kuba… then you are really missing out!

The inside of the restaurant is straight out of Cuba, with the brightly painted walls and murals. Great music. The staff are all attentive but mostly seem content to stand to the side and chat. I ordered the Empanadillas (not shown), with spinach and ricotta, which were absolutely fantastic. Then the Sloppy José— the meat was a little dry and flavorless, not much cheese— otherwise good. The Tres Leches cake was great but too sweet for me.

Only reason for a 4 on atmosphere is this is a really local/student eats, so don’t expect anything fancy on the inside. But, we’ve eaten at Kuba Kuba before and know that local eats are usually the best. This time, it was for breakfast. As always, the food is excellent, the prices fair, and service very good. The photo is of an omelet… a large breakfast, for sure. Parking can be tricky because Kuba Kuba is located just off VCU campus and apartment/house parking is at a premium. This is a great place to eat if you want wonderful food that’s not microwaved and has a touch of a different culture.

So much character in such a small space. I love the representation for the Cuban culture here, from the varied art on the wall, to the items for sale. There were only 3 people to help service, 1 older gentleman, a young blonde lady, and another gentleman whom was cooking everything. Since only 2 people could help the ever growing crowd for lunch, it became a little more difficult to get attention without calling anyone over, but that was OK. The quality of the food was very fresh, although it lacked in flavor. I had to keep using the house sauce for my meal (shredded beef over rice). Also tried the tres leches cake, which to me was very dense (pound cake like) with not much moisture. Not to say it was bad, but just lacked what I am used to in a tres leches cake. Everyone was very friendly and prices were decent, so I might give it another try one day, if even only to grab a bottle of their house sauce (it was very very good).

Ordered the Kubanaso (Cuban plus Spanish chorizo) to go and it was absolutely amazing! It came with slow roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and chorizo added to a classic Cuban sandwich. It was garnished with chopped onions, tomatoes and peppers and came with a spicy specialty sauce. It looked wonderful and was hands-down delicious!

I was really excited to visit Kuba Kuba since it’s known as a Cuban restaurant here in Richmond. As someone born in Cuba and raised in Miami, Cuban food and coffee are very close to my heart. I stopped in just for a colada, expecting that classic, strong, sweet Cuban coffee experience.
When I arrived, I asked for a colada, but the staff member seemed unfamiliar with what that was. She offered me a cortadito instead (though it was mispronounced), and when I tried explaining that I wanted a Cuban coffee — like an espresso but prepared the traditional Cuban way — there was still confusion. I was eventually asked if I wanted one or two shots of espresso, which isn’t how a colada is typically served.
Unfortunately, what I received was essentially a watery two-shot espresso without the sweetness or the bold, distinct flavor of Cuban-roasted coffee. It didn’t resemble a traditional colada at all. The taste was flat and disappointing.
I don’t expect every place to replicate Miami exactly, but when a restaurant represents itself as Cuban, I do hope for some authenticity — especially with something as iconic as Cuban coffee. As someone considering making Richmond home, I was really hoping for a spot that felt like a little piece of that culture. This experience left me feeling more sad than satisfied.
I truly hope they consider refining their coffee offerings to better reflect traditional Cuban café culture.
