Secluded outpost of the McMenamins chain in a barnlike building with live music & shuffleboard.
Oregon Mini Society
Oregon Mini Society descended on McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern, and it could not have been a better destination.
First off, the table. If you know, you know. The massive old-growth timber round table just inside the side entrance is worth the visit alone. It’s the kind of table that makes you want to count the growth rings and debate its age over lunch (we considered it… then the food arrived and priorities shifted). It comfortably handled our lively group and instantly set the tone for a relaxed, communal gathering.
The staff was friendly, patient, and genuinely accommodating. When a group of classic car enthusiasts shows up talking oil pressure, tire pressure, and twisty roads, that can go one of two ways. Here, we were welcomed like regulars.
The food was excellent, the atmosphere warm and historic, and the setting makes it an ideal starting point, mid-point, or finish line for any car club tour. Easy access, plenty of space, and just the right vibe for lingering conversations after the engines cool.
If you’re planning a group drive or just want a spot with character and great service, Rock Creek Tavern checks every box.
We’ll absolutely be back… and next time, we might finally count those rings.

Great evening in an “old” wooden house, with lots of Irish beer, and some nice meet. Food was good, and great atmosphere with a cold winter night in this wooden huge bar.

Four stars could be a tad generous, but the people are nice, and I suppose consistency is worth something. You come to a McMenamins – and Rock Creek Tavern in particular, for the warm vibe, live music, and the food – it’s alright, but let’s be honest, they don’t hire trained chefs from a culinary institute. Moreover, it really feels like they are the main driver, or beneficiary, of inflation, depending on your viewpoint. Most burgers will set you back around $20. This is on average 2-4 bucks higher than the average for a brew pub burger in the Portland metro area (I’ve checked) and actually the subject of a Reddit thread, the high food prices at McMenamins that is. Inflation has affected everyone, but apparently within the walls of a McMenamins restaurant inflation is 10-15 % annually, everywhere else it’s 5 % or less. And it’s not like the servers or the kitchen staff is paid exceptionally well. They’re not. I know some of them. Even worse, at the hotel “resorts” get ready to experience South American style inflation, without having to fly to Buenos Aires.
Best to enjoy McMenamins for what it is; a place with an offbeat vibe that’s so quirky, yet welcoming, you are drawn to relax there with friends and catch some live music, and since you’re going to be there for a while, you’re going to get hungry, so might as well order some food.
The one “deal” they do offer is the Passport program.

This place is very cozy and has a warm & welcome experience inside. Plenty of choices on the menu with several vegetarian selections. Food tasted excellent & service was quick.
The outside of the facility looks old (mossy roof), but new since was rebuilt after a fire, but used old building materials.

Great atmosphere, feels like you just walked into a European pub. Food was great- as with most McMenamins- this is the standard. My kids loved it. Service was some of the best I’ve had.

I wish 0 star was an option. This restaurant is my favorite spot of all times. I am a big fan of McMenamins restaurants and I have a McMenamins passport myself and I really enjoy all other locations, great food and full of joy and laughters. The reason I like this location the most is because of the atmosphere. It gives out a cabin-like vibe all year round and I always bring special guests visiting my place in Bethany. Last week, I brought my lady and her parents visiting from across the ocean to this location and I was very disappointed. It was a day prior to New Year’s Eve on Tuesday and it was busy so I do understand being short staffed as that many customers for that day was unexpected. Starting off at the check-in, we were given a table full of left over food and dirty plates after a long wait, then it took awhile to order our food. Again, I am a very understanding person and this was not a big deal for me. We got our food after decent amount of wait and I could have not been more disappointed at the plastic forks and knives. I queried why we were given plastic silverwares but an unfriendly staff briefly mentioned it was because “all of their normal silverwares were dirty” and then left. We paid for our meals and as we were leaving, not a single staff greeted us out. Overall, I am still a fan of McMenamins and I am a bit sad this place might not be my favorite spot anymore.

One of my absolute favorite McMenamins locations is this one, largely due to the inviting and cozy atmosphere it offers. The interior features charming fireplaces that add warmth and character, while the soft, low lighting enhances the intimate vibe. It’s the ideal place to settle in with a steaming hot toddy, especially during the crisp fall or chilly winter months when you want to escape the cold. I’m already looking forward to returning for happy hour soon, as they serve some delicious specials. Plus, there’s ample parking available, making it easy to visit without any hassle.

I’ve been here at least a dozen times. They used to have such great ambiance and music all the time, especially before the fire. Now it’s a little more hit-and-miss on the music, but still a wonderful atmosphere and experience! Waitstaff is wonderful, and Cajun tots are bomb 🙂
