Review: Anchor Bar, Buffalo

We recently visited the famous Anchor Bar in Buffalo, known as the original home of the legendary chicken wings. Since we are vegetarians, we decided to try their vegetable wings, which were made from cauliflower (Gobi). The dish tasted quite similar to Gobi Manchurian, a familiar Indo-Chinese favorite, and had a good balance of crunch and flavor. Though it was not exactly the traditional “wing” experience that the place is known for, it was still a satisfying vegetarian alternative for those who prefer to avoid meat.

The ambience of the restaurant was warm and lively, giving a classic Buffalo feel with its rustic décor, sports memorabilia, and casual dining setup. The crowd was cheerful, and the overall environment made the evening pleasant. However, our server seemed newly joined and was not fully aware of some menu details or ingredient information. She was polite and tried her best, but it was evident that she was still getting familiar with the place and the process. With more experience, she will surely handle things more confidently.

Despite this small hitch, the service was prompt, and the food was served hot and fresh. The drinks were well-prepared, and the staff was courteous overall. The restaurant’s reputation for chicken wings is clearly justified by the buzz around us, as many guests were relishing their signature sauces.

For vegetarians, Anchor Bar still offers a decent experience with its cauliflower wings and side dishes. If you’re visiting Buffalo and want to taste a piece of local food history in a friendly setting, this place is worth checking out.

Overall Rating: 4/5 – Great ambience, good food, friendly service, slight room for improvement in staff training.

Pretty good service and atmosphere. Wings could be better. They barely had any sauce on them. I like how there are coat hangers in the booth seating. The bathrooms were also very clean. Overall unless you prefer saucier wings (try Applebees or Bocce) I would recommend this place for dining.

The best place for wings in the area! I’ve been a regular for over a year now and prefer this location over the original one. The extra drive is well worth the wait for excellent chicken and better sauce choices.

Jackie always takes care of us and remembers our order. Even if she isn’t our server for the night at times, she still comes to check on us to make sure everything is right.

The hot pepper bacon jam is to die for! It has an amazing sweetness to it with a small amount of heat. The bacon is the perfect final touch to create a sauce that is both salty and sweet.

Ordered 10 wings to go and a side salad. Place was dead, hardly any customers. Drank a beer then ordered the wings, the bartender made me a delicious mudslide while I was waiting for the to go order. The wings took a very long time but as soon as I received my order I cashed out and left (was done with my drink and just sitting there waiting for awhile), drove to my hotel literally 3 minutes away. Did I receive an old dead kitchen mistake that had been sitting in the kitchen window three hours before being given to me? I received all drums, not a single flat, and they were the driest, non-saucy, room temp absolute worst wings I have ever had. Came here to experience buffalo’s first wing. Was not expecting the best quality, but was given something way worse than old gas station quality. Would not write a review even if they had been mediocre, but these were just all around bad. The wings given to the customers near me while I was there looked way better. Was I given an old kitchen mistake since they could pawn it off on a to go customer? Not acceptable for being almost $20 for 10 wings. Very let down.

We came here based on recommendations, and I have to say: never again. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had.

Location: We ended up at the branch near Target in Buffalo because it was closer for us, even though we heard the Main Street location was the original. Honestly, I wish we had never bothered with this place at all.

Food: We ordered two sets of wings with different sauces. The first batch came out with a black hair right in it. They took the plate away and brought it back suspiciously fast—clearly just removed the hair instead of making a fresh plate. We tried to continue, but then we found another hair in the second portion. Disgusting doesn’t even cover it.

Service: When we pointed out the problem again, the response was shockingly rude. Instead of apologizing or trying to make it right, a staff member (in dirty clothes!) basically argued with us and acted like we were making it up. It was beyond unprofessional. Even when we just wanted to leave, they questioned whether we’d paid the bill as if we were the problem.

Overall: Absolutely awful experience. The taste was terrible, the service was worse, and the entire situation was handled horribly. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. We’ve had far better wings at other places. This was a complete disappointment and honestly, a bit of a health concern.

Food was amazing.
The hot wings tasted like every other hot wing. I honestly didn’t see the fuss.

The lemon pepper wings were the best I’ve had.

Coupled with the gregarious wait staff it’s a good place to stop and grab a bite.

We chose this location because it was close to the hotel. We made a reservation online, but when we got there we were told they can’t see those. It didn’t matter the place was not at all crowded. We ordered beef on weck and wings. The wings were fine. The beef on weck was disgusting. Worse than steak-ums. The French fries were good (even though we ordered tater tots). The waitress was nice but I had to ask several times for wet wipes.

Really good sauces and wings. The regular original sauce is very flavorful not just vinegary like the sauces you find a lot in NJ. The honey bourbon bbq sauce was pretty sweet but very tasty as well. Both the boneless and bone in wings are great with a nice crisp exterior, not soggy at all. Probably the meatiest boneless wings I’ve seen. We also got salads and the blue cheese they use is very good. I got the fuzzy peach martinit which was pretty good as well. The fried pickles have dill in the batter which is a nice touch

Tonight we ordered the signature buffalo wings, honey garlic boneless chicken and a kids pizza with mozzarella & pepperoni. Amazingly the boneless chicken is delicious. The mozzarella cheese on the pizza is nice and the blue cheese sauce comes with the buffalo chicken wings are tasty, there are chunks of small blue cheese pieces inside the sauce. This place is very good for family gatherings. Love it.
