Despite having three young children under four years old, there were still open tables. The next day, we tried again, but they refused to honour our reservation. We were given a table, and the kids’ meals arrived. They ate, but no one checked on us or offered water refills.
Forty minutes later, the waiter came by and asked how we were doing. We told her that we hadn’t received our food. She then returned and said it was ready, but they had forgotten to bring it out. We waited another 25 minutes for the food to arrive.
The meals were mediocre, and we had to ask three times to get water refills. No one apologized for the poor service.
People for $130 ..
ATMOSPHERE:
Located on the first level of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, this is currently Hawaii’s only location. It’s a pretty big restaurant at 2 levels, and also offers outdoor seating with a view of a side street.
FOOD:
Salt & Pepper Calamari
Strips only, no tentacles (boo!) with ramekins of salt & pepper and sweet chili on the side. Pretty crispy and not overly oily.
Lo Mein
I opted for chicken. The noodles were stir fried perfect and the dish had a nice subtle flavor. Very mainstream and nothing special. This was the only item on the menu that wooed me, unfortunately. Pricey for the simple ingredients.
Kalbi Jim
My friend’s choice. 3 huge chunks of meat sitting on dinosaur-like sized bones. This dish was disappointing. The meat was a bit rubbery but did have an okay kalbi taste. There was nothing else on the platter except for a sprinkling of green onions. So visually boring and lifeless. Not worth the price.
Pepper Steak
My other friend’s choice. The stir fry of tender meat, red & green peppers, and onions done in a dark brown sauce was tasty, slightly sweet and salty.
SERVICE:
The reception at the host stand wasn’t welcoming at all. Received no welcome, no smile, just a stare. Nice. We were seated immediately on a Saturday night – odd in bustling Waikiki, and something that would never happen at Cheesecake Factory down the road. This should’ve been our first sign on the quality of this place.
Our table top was clean, but the seats dirty with food crumbs and oil spots. I went to the bar and grabbed some napkins to wipe them up. Our female server noticed and was apologetic and offered to clean up which was nice. The floor was also littered with food crumbs. Come on people!? Over all, our server was good – friendly, professional and pretty attentive.
OVERALL:
Very mainstream, over-priced food, with average service. I’m glad I gave them another try and my final decision has been made about this place.
The ambiance was generally very nice. It’s great that you can choose to sit either inside or outside. The indoor seating area was beautifully decorated and created a warm, inviting atmosphere. The outdoor area wasn’t as nicely set up, but it made up for it with a lovely view.
Unfortunately, the service was disappointing this time. Despite the restaurant not being very busy, the staff seemed extremely overwhelmed and disorganized. Everything took much longer than it should have – from taking our order to bringing out the food and drinks.
In summary: fantastic food and a pleasant setting, but the service clearly needs improvement. I hope this was just an off day, because the potential is definitely there.
PF Chang’s is across the street for the hotel. I had Teriyaki Chicken with fried rice came with an appetizer I had the soup.
My food was hot fresh and delicious.
I had leftovers to take back to the room. Amazing Staff
