Back in 1987 we needed a place to go. A place to drink good coffee and watch the world go by. A place where good food was homemade and where the desserts were fresh. We decided to buy and renovate a derelict building on old Route 66 in Nob Hill. Along the way we started a scratch bakery, cooked a lot of good food, learned to roast coffee beans and got so busy that we had to build more cafes. Today, despite a few more locations, a name change, and 350 more employees, we are still a small, local company that serves up community from scratch every day.

Relaxed cafe chain serving globally influenced American fare, including all-day breakfast.

My family and I have been coming to this place for salads and desserts — they’re really good!
Today, we veered off and ordered the huevos rancheros, fish & chips, and chicken tenders.
The red chili on my huevos rancheros had good flavor, but once I started eating, I got a little bummed out because my corn tortillas were cold. I had to ask for them to be reheated. The fish & chips were okay. They would have been better if the batter was crispy, but it was soggy and the fries tasted old and hard. The chicken tenders were the same; the batter was soggy too. We will still come back, but we will stick to what we know is delicious.

We had lunch here today, August 16th and while the service at the counter was very nice it was downhill after that. We got two regular hamburgers, 1 sandwich and 1 kids breakfast along with 1 dessert and spent $85. That is way way too expensive for that type of food. The burgers were almost ok. They were dry and flavorless. The sandwich was not OK. The kids breakfast had less than 1 full piece of bacon, maybe 1 full egg that was scrambled. All the fries tasted older and re-re-refried then baked or something.

The food was the worst food ever. We haven’t been here in awhile and decided to try the Roasted Summer Panini that was terrible. No flavored, burnt bread, cold fries. We will never come back here on a Friday night in the evening.. the cherry pie tasted old and dry… $60.00 in food.

Friendly service but flying star is getting pricey. It’s was 45 before tip. I was not impressed with burger or Mac n cheese. Pretty bland and the fries tasted hard like they had been sitting out.

Update 11/2024: I’d still give it 3 stars. The food is still marginal at best. The chicken on my salad did not have a texture close to any chicken I’ve had before. The chairs are torn up and the place could use some attention.

Ordered a cake. It was tasty but much of the bottom of the cake was dry. No military discount at this location.

Flying Star is one of my favorite places to take the kids, meet a friend, or to dine solo. The patio is lovely on a nice day and the fire is a lovely touch on a chilly day. My favorite dish is the omelet. You can make it the way you like it. The kids love the BLT and the French toast. The overall vibe is excellent. I highly recommend it.

I recently visited Flying Star Café in Albuquerque and, while the staff were very nice and the location is excellent with a clean and organized atmosphere, the food was a real disappointment. Both the meals and the sweets lacked flavor and quality, and nothing on the menu stood out as a signature dish or something worth coming back for. For such a nice setting, I expected much better food. Unfortunately, it was not a good dining experience overall.

Larissa at Flying Star was wonderful! She helped us at the counter and was so friendly and patient while we decided what to order. She made great suggestions and made the whole process easy and pleasant. Even though it’s order-at-the-counter, she still took the time to make us feel welcomed and taken care of. Her positive attitude really stood out and made our visit better. Thank you, Larissa, for the great service!
