Maialino Mare is a Roman-style trattoria with an emphasis on seafood pasta and fish—a coastal sister to the original Maialino restaurant that opened in New York City in 2009. Sourced from its local family of farmers and fishers, Maialino Mare uses quality, seasonal ingredients throughout the menu, complemented by a robust Italian wine list and beautiful, rustic desserts. Executive Chef Rose Noel draws inspiration from Roman trattorias to create seasonally inspired Italian fare that celebrates our relationships with local farmers and fishers. Situated near Nationals Park in the Navy Yard, Maialino Mare offers seasonal outdoor seating and private dining options.

What a wonderful restaurant located at the Navy Yard. It is beautifully decorated with a marine color scheme throughout the restaurant. We started with a Ceaser salad with homemade dressing (with ground anchovies), and it was right on point. We also had burrata, and it was served at the perfect temp and very tasty.
My entree was my goto Bucatini All’Amatricana, and I can’t wait to get back to try it again. Huge chunks of Guanciale and perfectly cooked al dente fresh bucatini. My better half had the Malfatti, which I never heard of before. It is essentially the scraps of pasta (from making ravioli, fettuccini) thrown together and cooked in one dish. So there is no real shape to the pasta, but that is part of the allure.
To those that don’t know, or are new to the internet, Mailiano means little pig (suckling pig), so many of the dishes are focused around the pig and all parts of the pig. The Malfatti was served with the braised pig and Argula and was great.
Don’t miss the cocktails as they were great too. I recommend the Giardini Naxos. very crisp and refreshing, perfect for a late afternoon drink (or anytime as well)
A fine addition to the Navy Yard, and now I cant wait to get up to NYC to try Mailiano in the spring.
This was not the case. The staff, from the moment we stepped in, made us feel comfortable, and had an “at-home” feel. After having a stressful day at work, entering an atmosphere that was calm and relaxing even during one of their seemingly busiest times of the year was a nice change of pace. We never felt like we were being rushed in the restaurant and the pace of the food was perfect.
Overall, the atmosphere reminded me of trattoria’s that we visited in Italy. The decor was simple, they had traditional Italian dinners, and the waiter even asked if we wanted sparkling or still water!
The food was amazing and were at the perfect portions. By the end of the night I was full, but not “stuffed” like at some Italian restaurants. We started with the octopus appetizer, each had our own pastas, sirloin steak to share, and desserts to share.
We will definitely come back for another date night! I highly recommend checking it out!
We got there early, and the restaurant worked with us to seat us early. This was nice. We had an out of town guest, and wanted to impress them. Here’s the gist:
1) seated a 7:45, our server was very nice- but was far overworked (likely due to the staffing issues due to COVID)
2) Didn’t get spoken to until 10 minutes after we sat. Cocktails came 25 minutes after seating.
3) Ordered appetizers, pastas and a main fish entree for four of us.
4) appetizer came out 30 min after ordering. Out of Ricotta for the Focaccia- so they comped us. Very nice- but a main reason we ordered this was for that ingredient.
5) At 9:30, our cocktails and bottle of wine were finished but no entrees. I got up to ask- Staff told us it was being plated. After 15 minutes of waiting for pasta after being told it was being plated, I got up again to ask for check but was greeted by lukewarm pasta. 2 out of the three dishes were mediocre, one was solid.
6) We canceled the fish entree due to time. They comped us the bottle of wine- very nice.
Finally: servers were nice people. But Restaurant isn’t ready for a Saturday night. Prices are far too high to deal with that level of mediocrity.
Again, everyone is nice, but got home late and had to make a sandwich for myself and gf because even the pasta entrees were too small to be filling.
Other reviews on here seem to be great- so it was probably a bad night. Take it for what it’s worth. Wish the best for them going forward but won’t go back.
