We went to Sumo for our first wedding anniversary and were let down so much so we wished we were at Shogun in Austin. We had sushi and Teppanyaki and it was not worth the money that was paid. My wife had scallops and I had Wagyu steak. My wife said her plate was OK but my steak was definitely overcooked. I asked for medium and I got well done. The chef was a little overconfident and wasn’t very talented. On the door outside it’s at SA Today’s 2025 best pick for Japanese restaurant, which I think they need a new food reviewer. Also, our sushi was good, but we did not receive a full role just eight pieces. I would not suggest this place for the price. It looked very rundown on the inside. Oh yeah, and the tea tasted like I was on a cruise ship with recycled water.

Friendly waitress and we had a good chef. The volcano roll was delicious, the chicken fried rice was seasoned and prepared well, veggies were delicious, my chicken was juicy, the Godzilla (alcoholic beverage) was a nice treat, and the portions were fair for our table of four. Honestly not much of a show compared to other hibachi restaurants, definitely wasn’t an $83 experience for a single person.

Great amount of food, extremely nice staff, however the food lacked flavor, so I had to add the sauce from my chicken gyoza. The ginger sauce was too tart for my taste, and I don’t like any of the yum yum sauce anywhere from a personal perspective, and I didn’t get any soy sauce. I Love Hibachi and never understand why some are flavoring while cooking, and don’t require sauce, which is my preference.
The dark car photo with the veggies underneath. Looks Amazing right!

I’ve been to a lot of hibachi places, including this one pre-Covid, so that’s my reference point.

The server was wonderful…just so sweet and attentive. Our chef was really great at engaging the whole table, really friendly and cool…I liked his personality a lot, but if I’m being honest the actual technique and show was just okay. It’s an art form and skill so I imagine it takes a lot of practice to master it.

Soup was good! Food was really salty and buttery…very heavy. And the price is way higher than I was expecting. If you share a plate, you’ll pay $12.50 extra for that entree, which is already $35+. Keep in mind you’ll also need to, at minimum, tip the chef separately. They add 18% for parties of 4 or more, so keep that in mind, too. Walked out of there about $200 lighter for two shared entrees and 3 fountain drinks.

The atmosphere…I remember it being nicer. It was just kind of dark and dank. Not very lively, but I can tell the staff do their best to bring the energy and mood up. The people there are great, so that’s a definite plus.

Chef Aaron Professionally cooked our food with amazing confidence and brought comedy to the kitchen. We enjoyed our meal time very much. My daughter told me she would like to celebrate her bday at this location. Chef Aaron get ready for this event in 2026. We will return for service.

We visited Sumo Japanese Steakhouse and was not impressed. From the moment we walked in, the experience was very concerning. The tile floor was soaking wet and I nearly slipped walking in. If my husband didn’t grab my arm I could have really hurt myself. There were fans all over the entrance, which looked like an attempt to manage ongoing water issues.
Once inside we saw a man cleaning ceiling vents between two hibachi grills while customers were seated, and being entertained by the chef. Which raises serious hygiene concerns. Everything felt damp: the carpet, the walls, the air, even the table area. At one point my arms were slipping off the table. Water was dripping from the ceiling onto our plate. That was it for me. We informed the waiter, who completely understood that we would be leaving and this was highly unacceptable.
The condition of this place is alarming. It felt unsafe and unsanitary. My new shoes were stained from the wet carpet, and I could have been seriously injured if my husband hadn’t caught me when I slipped.
This place needs a serious inspection. Safety and hygiene codes are clearly not being followed. I would not recommend it.
As we were leaving there was a man putting white towels all over the front entrance. Literally everything in this restaurant was completely soaked with moisture.
Note————
Addition from last night, I just realize that my brand new green shirt now also has a stain on the back from the moisture from the black bar chairs that I sat in at the table!!!
This is truly unacceptable on so many levels.
