Reviews
Located at 15 Stone St, New York, NY 10004, Toro Loco truly lives up to its reputation as one of the best spots for Mexican food in New York City. The atmosphere feels straight out of a movie—a classic bar setting with character, warmth, and personality.
One of the highlights for me was its unbeatable location, right across from our hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton, making it a perfect and convenient choice after a long day exploring the city. The fact that Spanish is spoken adds an extra layer of comfort, creating a welcoming, almost family-like environment.
The Mexican food is flavorful and satisfying—exactly what you need to warm your body and spirit during New York’s cold winter days. Whether you’re stopping by to share a meal with friends or family after visiting the Statue of Liberty, or simply looking to enjoy a lively evening in a classic bar atmosphere, Toro Loco delivers.
Without a doubt, this is a place I would happily return to again.
Since my friends and I were indecisive, we spent some time to think and we didn’t feel rushed to order. The servers were really nice despite us taking our time to order and pick out our drinks. They didn’t rush us to eat and leave either which I’m grateful for.
How onto the food:
We ordered 2 apps, 3 tacos, 3 drinks and review of each item is below.
APPS
• Chicken Empanadas – 8.8/10 – absolutely love this, would reorder again and again. Most of the empanadas I have had are dry but this isn’t. The filling is juicy and the sauce adds a kick of spice which is nice. This was my #1 favorite in my entire order.
• Quesadilla – 7/10 – we got the plain quesadilla without any filling and unfortunately, it just didn’t hit as much as we wanted it to. I think I’d get it again with additional filling next time just for the chew and kick.
TACOS
• Al Pastor – 8.3/10 – I loved the pineapple, it added a little kick with sweet and spicy and I adore it. The downside is the limes that were provided with the tacos weren’t exactly juicy and took some squeezing to get a couple droplets. This was my #2 for our tacos
• Carnitas – 8/10 – This was good but it was just missing a little something even when I added the sauce. The pork was flavorful and the sauce added a good kick but it was just missing a little something (pineapple) that al pastor. This was my #3 choice.
• Birria Tacos – 8.5/10 – My favorite out of the tacos we ordered. It was eaten warm so I’m not sure if that’s why it might’ve been my favorite, the consumé broth was really warm and yummy – I would order again and again.
DRINKS
• White sangria – 8.6/10 – I adore sweet drinks and this was exactly it. It was sweet and refreshing and exactly what I needed to pair with the savory meal.
• Passionfruit mojito – 9/10 – knocked my friend out (figuratively) she said it was really sweet and you can taste the alcohol. She would reorder
• Mango mojito (mocktail) – 8/10 – pretty good, limey, can’t really taste the mango
DESSERTS:
• churros – 8.5/10 – crunchy, sweet, came with two dipping sauces. A nice ending to the meal
• creme brulee cheesecake – 8/10 – I expected it to have the hard creme brulee shell but it didn’t I think it was the flavor of the cheesecake ?? It’s not bad but my friend and I were full at this point haha.
Overall, I would come back and I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my other friends and relatives back. Service was really attentive and nice, the food was good and the atmosphere is light and lively. It wasn’t too loud for a Friday which is nice especially since I can talk to my friends and hear them across the table.
P.S their white napkins are ELITE. It feels like a 5 ★ hotel type napkin.
Everything was delicious.
Only improvement would be the lighting as it was a bit dark for us being older adults, so our eyesight aren’t as sharp as youngsters.
I really enjoyed the chicken tacos and chicken empanada, plus the nachos which had generous toppings. Another of us enjoyed the soft beef tacos and our son’s favourite was the nachos. We all loved the coriander dips and mango dips that came with the empanadas.
