First off I will say when you first walk in the smell of soap hits you in the face. Could be a good or bad thing depending on if you’re sensitive to strong scents. I just personally found it off putting but others may like find it appealing.
I will say our waitress was very kind and attentive during our meal. Other than that I feel like the rest of my experience was negative.
I will say out of my family I am the pickiest eater so it’s harder for me to find places I like eating at compared to them. They’re a lot more lenient when it comes to restaurants we try.
At Som Tum Thai I ordered the Thai tea to drink, crab Rangoon for appetizer then vegetable pad Thai and panang curry for my main course. Unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy any of it.
The Thai tea tasted like it came out of a bottle or can I could purchase at any Asian grocery market. The size is also very small. The crab Rangoon was ok but lacked filling. Then the vegetable pad thai was very salty, I’m not sure if it’s whatever they use to increase the spice level because my sister got the same thing but no spice and she said hers tasted fine. Whereas mine came out salty.
I think the only item that was somewhat good was the panang curry. I had no complaints about that dish. But as for the rest, unfortunately it lacked flavor or had too much (salty) flavor.
I’m sure my family wouldn’t mind coming back but for me personally I think I will continue to look for other good Thai restaurants in the area.
We are glad we stopped by.
We started with a pot of Jasmine Hot Tea for the table, pretty standard bagged tea.
Then came the papaya salad – american style, it is made in a sweet and sour sauce, wasn’t my favorite as I’m a fan of the original recipe but wanted to try it anyways, which next time I will and update my review. The salad portion was very fair for price.
Ordered the Ginger Shrimp appetizer and OMG possibly my new favorite way to have shrimp, it was so flavorful and delicious.
The crab rangoons were pretty standard nothing special about them to make them stand out.
The Lao sausage was tasty, another pretty standard appetizer, although I will mention the portion was large and the chili sauce served with it was fantastic!
The kids had the chicken lo mein noodles from the kids menu and they enjoyed it.
The Tom Yum soup was possibly the BEST item we ordered, the soup was packed with lemongrass flavor and veggies, only regret was getting a cup instead of a bigger portion but alas we shall be back for more!
Another top item I’d recommend was the Lab Nah Noodle dish, we got it with shrimp.
I loved the gravy style sauce vs most places that serve a watery version of it, the noodles were really able to soak it up and acquire the fantastic flavor. The veggie portions are pretty skimp on this dish but the noodles were abundant. Would order again and request extra veggies.
I do wish the dishes came out spicy as ordered so many places hold back on the spice level for some reason.
The ladies’ bathroom was spacious and clean.
Would definitely recommend and bring out of town guest here.
The staff was also very polite.
I will update once I get to go have a full meal!
We also ordered the Chicken Delight. It had a slightly sweet brown sause that was very good! My husband even ate the veggies that came with it!
I’d say more about the Pad Thai but I will Sum it up for you.. If you want good food, good service and full belly… Go to Sum-Tum Thai!
