Reason 1: Chips and Salsa no longer free. Apparently they went from free to charging nearly $10 for a single bowl and one refill. Now they’re charging nearly $6 for the first bowl and $4 more for the second bowl so it ends up being the same price if you want 2 bowls. (Note: Their menu on their website still lists these as being free, so this was quite a shock.)
Reason 2: Service was non-existent and it wasn’t that busy. Our waitress never came back to our table to check on food, offered refills, brought our check, etc. We had to keep flagging down other people as they rushed by to see if they would take care of us instead. Helpful Hint: If you want tips on already increased food prices, I’d suggest you actually pay attention to your patrons.
Reason 3: Food wasn’t that great and value wasn’t awesome. Their steak fajitas were very bland and my husband’s quesadilla was like half the size of any quesadilla I’ve ever seen. I wanted Pepsi (which I’d had here before) only to be informed they’re now selling Coke. (Again, the website menu still says Pepsi/Diet Pepsi are on offer.)
I don’t expect Mexican food in little podunk towns like this to be as good as it is in say Phoenix, but the charm and hospitality and the kind of food you would expect wasn’t there anyway (even though we’d had previous good experience here but it’s been a little while). You can call yourself the oldest and finest but is it only because there’s no competition and no other choice nearby?

Chips and salsa are around $5 for about 8 Oz of chips (give or take). The salsas themselves taste like pizza sauce (marinara sauce) with a strong flavoring of just plain tomato paste. They were very pricey so I thought, you know what, the food might be worth the price. But no, the food had hardly any seasoning, the beans were only warm, and the shredded beef tasted like it came from a pre-made dinner dish like those found at Safeway. I could have made better food for 1/4 of my bill at home but I wanted to enjoy a meal at a restaurant with my family. I have eaten at many many Mexican restaurants, even in states across the country, but this one by far is the worst one I’ve ever eaten at. The server was very kind in tone but she lacked table manners. When grabbing a plate her arm went straight across the front of my sister’s face. She never asked how we liked our food or if theres anything else we need. Only for us to leave early then have to wait another 6-7 minutes for the 3 boxes we asked for. We only waited that long because we asked the hostess to grab them. I was looking forward to a meal with my family only to be highly disappointed in mostly the quality of the food and partly the service. Only good news is that the restaurant was clean.

We have been going here for years. The food was always good and the staff amazing. They small business which we love to support.But recently things have changed. All the dishes have gone up in price. But that’s to be expected with inflation. The price increase, however, is much more than inflation. But they are now charging three dollars to split a plate and are now charging for chips and salsa. And it’s purple bowl. Out here where Mexican food is so prevalent chips and salsa is always complementary. The staff is still amazing. However, I think we will be dining at different restaurants in Wickenburg. The only reason I am giving this many stars is because of the staff. They have consistently have been so friendly and warm.

Since 2016, I’ve driven from Phoenix to Wickenburg just for Anita’s Cocina. The food was worth the miles, and I happily supported them through menu changes and rising prices.
But my last visit will be my last. The first thing I was told? Chips and salsa are no longer free. Now it’s $10 for the same small bowl they used to serve for free — with just one refill. That’s not hospitality, that’s a cover charge in disguise.
There’s maybe $2 worth of chips and salsa in that bowl. The only real difference now is the extra $8 on the bill and the bad taste it leaves — and I’m not talking about the food.
It’s clear they won’t go back to free chips. Why would they? They’re the only Mexican restaurant in Wickenburg. But just because customers have few options doesn’t mean they should feel taken for granted.
Anita’s, you’ve gone from being a must-visit to a “never again.” I’ll take my appetite — and my $10 — back to Phoenix, where the chips are still free and the loyalty goes both ways.

It was after lunch when we got here and I think they eat late around Wickenburg. We had to wait a while for a table.
I come here once in a while because I love that the owner loves President Trump. So do I.
The food has a peculiar flavor. Maybe it’s more of a traditional Southwest. I’m not sure how to identify it. If my wife and I had to describe it we agreed on bland.
The chile rellano was not at all what I expected. It had two scrambled egg patties (overdone) with cheese and a few chille strips inside. Not a whole chille. Egg is just not what I like. It’s a thing in southwest food I think.
Server was very nice and efficient.
Sorry. I really wanted to leave a fantastic review. Honestly.
I will be prepared next time.

One of our favorite Mexican restaurants for years. When we lived in Wickenburg, and later when we were just passing through.
We haven’t been in at least 2 years, maybe longer. What a difference. Very disappointing.

Absolutely Horrible Experience at Anita’s Conchina
I was at the table when this all went down, and I still can’t believe how ridiculous it got.
We told the waitress the food was bland—like, no flavor at all. Her response? “Just dump salsa on it.” Then she brought over a bowl of the same meat and said, “I think it tastes excellent. Eat this.” It was honestly insulting.
After that, she completely ignored us. Wouldn’t come back to the table, wouldn’t check on us, wouldn’t give us the bill. We asked for the manager—she said no. Asked for the manager’s number—she refused. Said she didn’t “feel comfortable” giving us any info. What kind of restaurant hides their manager?
Then she said the owner approved half off, but she wasn’t going to do it. When we said we’d pay the discounted price, she called the cops. Over a discount. On food we barely touched because it was so nasty.
We were stuck at the register trying to pay, and she started asking me and my siblings if we were okay, if something was wrong, like she was trying to make it look like we were the problem. It was creepy and totally out of line.
This wasn’t just bad service—it was harassment. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable in a restaurant. If you’re from out of town, don’t even think about eating here. You’ll regret it.
Zero stars. Never again.

The food and service here is fantastic! We come to visit Wickenburg about once per year, and Anita’s is always a mandatory stop for us. Quesadilla with the works is my fave.

Well, hard for me to give a thorough review. I walked in as a single and I couldn’t even get anyone to look at me. I waited several minutes and there were groups of people waiting to be seated. I just walked out. BUT the food MUST be incredible. The parking lot was full, and there was a long wait to get seated. I had already driven all over Wickenberg looking for a good place. I found it.. I think. I’ll be back. ❤️
