I was influenced to book a reservation at Kira, and I wasn’t disappointed. We generally hit Hando in the Heights. It’s always a sure thing. But I was convinced to venture out to Upper Kirby on a Sunday afternoon. We hit lunch at 1230. I work with the public so on my days off, I’m generally peopled-out. The vibe was perfect with just a few others dining. It was quiet and so chill. They had me at “Japanese Jazz” in the reviews honestly. There were a few options to choose from. We chose the Temaki set (3 for him, 4 for me). It was honestly a good amount of food: miso, crudo, and handrolls. We each had a cocktail l and . If I remember correctly, it was just a little over $100 with gratuity. Well worth it. Presentation, umami, vibe…oh and parking! Kira is also a Resy restaurant, so if you’re an Amex Platinum member, use your rewards!!

So so so so good. Would definitely recommend this to friends and would consider coming back. The staff – Danny and chef Frankie were the best. Very friendly, took the time to chat with us, shared their experiences, gave us recommendations, explained what goes into our orders and was attentive to our needs. We ordered a couple of items and these items DID NOT DISAPPOINT!

We ordered the “Alive” cocktail, scallop crudo, chirasi donburi, the tuna donburi and the raspberry shaved ice (you dont want to miss that). Everything was delicious. The miso soup that came with the donburi had a smokey flavor to it and was very different with other miso soups we have had. Scallop crudo melts in your mouth. Fish in our donburi were fresh. Shaved ice had all the textures and flavors tied together nicely.

We were told that there are promotions everyday like sunday has $10 cocktails and Wednesdays has a special price on the wagyu donburi. We will definitely come back to try the wagyu donburi!

All in all, 5 plus stars. Everyone should try it! Call to make reservations or check on availability beforehand since the seating is all at the counter and may be limited during busy hours.

What a great lunch spot!

It’s in the same plaza as Pondicheri.

Went on Dec 26 and still saw quite a few patrons. I noticed their glasses first – elevated nonchalant chic. The waitstaff is sweet.

My friend and I ordered a crudo, a cucumber appetizer, a chirashi bowl and ikura bowl each, and the coffee kakigori.

The hotate and the chopped chutoro was quite a bit too fishy, and the coffee kakigori was far too salty and didn’t taste at all of coffee, but I liked the black sesame cream in the latter.

The rest were delicious. Portions are on the small end, which helps to really savor the meal. I especially loved:
– the sauce for the cucumber dish,
– the wasabi mixed with the actual root grated, and
– that my chirashi also had some ikura.
Would definitely re-visit.

Pricey paid parking in front of the restaurant or free 2-hr parking in the garage.

For my first time visiting I really enjoyed the happy hour that they have all day on Mondays. I walked in was seated quickly. It’s and intimate but cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Music selection was great. The service was quick and very well done. I really enjoyed the PORCH clarified rum cocktail Bluefin Tuna Crudo Maguro Temaki, Peking Duck Temaki, Lobster Temaki and Coconut & Mango Kakigori. Definitely reminded me of a Denver type of feel. Definitely would come back and would highly recommend to others. Great menu and the food was top notch. The porch was easily one of the best cocktails I’ve had in Houston. The weekly specials look great and intriguing.

Wow, what a intimate and great service restaurant for hand rolls and other Japanese food! Everything that we ordered was amazing thing, fresh, and delicious! Again, like I mentioned, the service was immaculate. I really like the vibe of the restaurant which includes the art, music, service. The food came out fast. We got the four hand rolled set, which came with crab, tuna, salmon, scallop. I would rank them in this order: crab, scallop, tuna, salmon. One small point that I like to mention was, I didn’t necessarily finish my plate since some of the stuffing of the hand roll fell onto the plate, but the waiter took that plate away before our dessert came. Overall, I highly recommended would come back.

Highly recommend visiting Kira in Houston. I had the lunch tasting and the scallop crudo was the highlight of my meal. The quality was fresh and the spicy tuna handroll paired with their chili crisp was a perfect combo. Finished with the matcha kakigori, but liked the raspberry one more. Besides the food, they have a modern vinyl collection and great service. Excited to visit again.

I’ve genuinely enjoyed every visit. Counter seating means you get a great view of everything being prepared so skillfully. The donburi bowls have to be my favorite, but temaki is always fun too. Some of the freshest fish I’ve found in Houston. You can’t leave without having the seasonal kakigori (shaved ice cream)!! I hear the ice is imported from Japan and you can watch them carve it to end a perfect night!

I love this place!! The food is delicious and fresh with unique takes on some classic sushi bites. The chefs are incredible. I’ve been twice and haven’t eaten anything I did not like. The staff is super personable always offering suggestions with enthusiasm and a smile. I will definitely be back and highly recommend. Meter paid parking out front. There’s also a paid parking lot.

Kira is an absolute gem. The ambiance is stunning—warm, modern, and effortlessly beautiful… and the service is just as exceptional. Every single person who worked there was genuinely kind and attentive, making the entire experience feel special.

The food was unforgettable. Every bite I took blew my mind with the flavor and quality of fish. As for my favorites— I always order miso soup at restaurants whenever it’s available, and Kira’s is hands down the best I’ve ever had. The bluefin tuna was spectacular and melted in my mouth. The handrolls were incredible too—especially the salmon/lox bagel, negitoro, and scallop. And to finish it all off, the raspberry kakigori was truly to die for!

Kira is officially one of my new favorite spots. Highly recommend! They may see me every Monday..

We found Kira, only due to Neo being recommend as the #1 sushi spot in town and was closed. Kira is their sister location.

We weren’t disappointed, and look forward to trying their new locations as well.

Currently Neo is closed for renovations as the chef opened Oru (open now) and later in 26’ opening another restaurant in Houston so stay tuned.

Service was top notch, not one thing can be said other than. Friendly, polite, knowledgeable of their menu, attentive, and over all a great experience.

The only complaint: the location is on the small side, and the music / noise level is high here. It’s such a small space that sounds echo and carry. So if that’s not your forte, you may want to visit during the day.

Otherwise, you’re in for a treat!
Happy Hour all day Monday’s, rest of the week is during a specific window.

For a first timers, I’d recommend the chefs special tasting. It was a great opener to show us what items Kira had to offer.

A MUST TRY: Lobster Hand Roll!
The butter is made over 2 days just for this pairing. Get ready to be blown away. I plan to request this on all the other combinations on my next visit.

If you’re a Steak or Wagyu type of person. Then the Wagyu & Egg hand-roll would be my suggestion as it was another favorite of ours.

If salmon is your go to the Smoke salmon would be the go to. Had a wonderful flavor.

Now, by request you can order the side dipping sauces. Highly suggest you try one of each to find your favorites, along with that butter!

One of the dishes had a great Aioli, sadly can’t recall which was which atm.

For dessert: If you’ve never had it, try it at least once.
KAKIGORI| KURAMOTO SHAVED ICE
This has been the closest to what we had in Japan. Mango is the best choice, however I’d recommend no coconut. It’s like taking a bite out of a cloud. The shaved ice is so soft it just instantly melts in your mouth. With the fruit and glaze, it provides a perfect sweetness.

With everything we had, we can’t wait to go back and look forward to trying Oru next week.

How was your experience?
What were some of your favorites?

Until next time.
