We started off with the wild boar soup and the tuna crudo for appetizers and they really slapped! Our server Drew was so kind and super attentive throughout the evening. We took his suggestion and got the smokehouse burger with bison and will be returning as soon as possible to get that again. We love that they cook everything in beef tallow it really tied all the flavors together.

The appetizers were the only saving grace, those were actually good especially the candied bacon.
The entree; elk and bison burgers were not too pleasing, meat itself is ok but the buns were absolutely awful; they were cold, soggy and unappealing in both appearance and taste.

So second time coming and possibly the last… I’ve been here before and I really liked it. This time I was honestly SO disappointed because I was really looking forward to coming here because it’s like a special occasion. So about the food— I ordered gluten free pizza. It was soggy and falling apart. Flavor was good. Also ordered a burger with a gluten free “bun” however it was not a bun it was small pieces of thin sandwhich bread that when I picked up the burger it had been disintegrated in the container already. So the burger just fell apart. Honestly I really wanted to have a nice meal but nobody could really enjoy the food. So that’s my review it was good before but this time was bad enough to tell me maybe ownership changed or quality control got fired man I’m not sure.

The Platypus & Gnome is such a gem in Wilmington! The staff made us feel right at home with their warm and friendly service. Everyone genuinely welcoming, it really added to the overall vibe of the place.
The menu is creative and full of unique options you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re in the mood for something adventurous or just want a well-made classic, there’s something for everyone. The quality of the food was top-notch—fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked.
I loved the cozy, relaxed atmosphere too. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, enjoy a great meal, and not feel rushed. Definitely planning to come back and try more from the menu!

Stopped in for lunch today and was completely blown away—this place instantly earned a spot on my “must-return” list. I ordered the kangaroo fries and a pizza, and both were phenomenal. The fries were next-level good, perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, but the real standout was the blue cheese cream sauce—rich, bold, and absolutely addictive.
The pizza was just as impressive: fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. What really sets this place apart, though, is that they’re seed-oil free, which is hard to find and makes the food taste even better. You can tell real thought goes into the ingredients and execution.

Wanted to try something different and man did it pay off! This place has a very cozy feel and the food was outrageously good. Had the rabbit bites and the pizza with peaches, duck breast prosciutto, jalapeño, mint and smoked goat cheese. The only constructive criticism I’d give is that the menu changes rapidly and doesn’t match up with the website so picking what you want to try beforehand won’t work. Was slightly disappointed they took kangaroo off the menu but the food we had was new, innovative and delicious!

I dined here in July for my birthday and had a wonderful experience with Drew our server! My partner and I have both worked in the industry, him as an executive chef and myself as a server and bartender.
We were impressed with everything from the fine quality ingredients to the excellent preparation of the food and beverages and of course stellar service.
