Stumbled across this place driving late Saturday and decided to come back for breakfast on Sunday. Reading the reviews I was a bit skeptical with both lots of good and negative reviews, especially after the change in ownership but decided to give them a try anyway. Upon walking in the vibe was terrific, it had a great 70’s feel. It looked great, was very clean and the aroma of the food made it even better. We were welcomed by a friendly staff and taken to our booth. Chatting with the host we discussed this was our first time in and the different reviews that I had read. She simply stated since the new owners took over that they had a different mindset on the food and made some changes. She talked about the decisions the new owners made which basically came down to “Do you want food prepared and premade by others or scratch made meals?”. So very happy they chose scratch made. I chose the biscuits and sausage gravy, OMG, some of the best I have had. It was not just a ladle of white glop with meat, rather a rich and creamy gravy with a small mirepoix of finely diced veggies, perfection, the biscuits were light and fluffy. My daughter got the Noah’s ark, the Belgian waffle had fantastic flavor. My wife got the Huevos Rancheros, she absolutely loved it. The only negative review my wife and I agreed on was the coffee could use some updating, but it is not a deal breaker. We can’t wait to return and try other meals, especially the desert and dinner menu offerings. So glad we did not listen to the negative reviews.

The people that run this place really care about food and service. It’s not quite a classic diner, but it is a classic diner when you walk in. Good options for sensitive diets. I had the meatloaf and a side of grits. Honestly, the side of grits could be its own meal…super rich and cheesy smoky perfect grits, best I’ve had on this coast. But the meatloaf and mash was way beyond what I expect…elevated flavors. I’ll go out of my way to go back. And the gal running the front of house was perfect. Not invasive, but attentive. Funny. Happy. Don’t sleep on this place.

My wife came home wanting pot roast—craving an old-school, home-style supper. I know plenty of meat-focused eateries—Roots, Gustav’s, Feast 316, The Hammond, etc.—but none of them serve pot roast. Fortunately Paul’s in downtown Vancouver does. My bride had never eaten there, and I hadn’t in decades. I was pleased to have the opportunity to try it again since it’s under new management. I also wanted to introduce her to The Elbow Room.

Paul’s is legit mid-century Americana. With a few exceptions, it’s a time capsule of the late ’60s to early ’70s. It was a Friday night at dinner time, yet the restaurant was chill. Only two other tables were occupied. I ordered the beef stroganoff. Of course, she ordered the pot roast. The pot roast was so tender she easily separated it with a fork, sending a puff of steam rising from the meat. My stroganoff was pretty good. I liked the noodles; the beef was okay.

The Elbow Room:
My better half loved it. This was my third visit. The place looks like it’s straight out of a scene from Baretta or The Rockford Files—the kind of spot where a plainclothes cop might lean on someone named Sugar Bear or Big Sid sitting in a back corner.

INSIDER TIP: Toby Maloney is no longer associated with The Elbow Room, and bartender Mike is now heading up the cocktail program and doing a fantastic job.

The Verdict:
Paul’s has a unique place in the restaurant ecosystem of VanPort. It has a comfortable, laid-back style with home-cooked meals from yesteryear. If you’re looking for this kind of joint, you’ll be hard-pressed to find alternatives. You can take that to the bank. -VanPort Insider

I’ll admit I was skeptical when Pauls changed hands, but DAMN the food is good. The biscuits and gravy are amazing. I’m picky as hell about my B&G and they deliver. Not too floury, white gravy, subtle spice, modern style with some veggies thrown in but not overdone (sausage gravy). It came out lukewarm and I (sheepishly) asked for it hotter and our supremely nice waitress (Lois) got it redone with no fuss. Clearly a pro, because it came back hot and delicious.

Give them a chance if you haven’t been back or haven’t tried them.

One reason I moved to downtown Vancouver was to have convenient access to locally owned neighborhood eateries like Paul’s. After my first visit, I came away with mixed feelings. The service was five stars. The pleasant woman who waited on me was attentive and clearly an old hand at taking care of customers. The standard bacon and eggs breakfast was just okay and the coffee was outrageously priced at $4.50 which was surprising for a simple diner like Paul’s. I’m not sure I’ll go back, mainly because of the many dining options to explore in the area. Still, the fact that Paul’s has survived for decades seems right and proper in a world of ever-changing tastes.

I had a wonderful experience from start to finish at Paul’s this evening.

My waiter, Timothy, actually waved at me while I was walking by and made funny gestures to encourage me to come in. I got in my car and almost drove home, but something told me to check this place out. I’m happy I did. Timothy took extra time to go over key menu items in detail, and went little bit into the backstory of the owners. I don’t think my dining experience would have been the same without his great service!

I ordered the corned beef hash with eggs, sweet potato fries, and a slice of carrot cake at the end. All items were incredible. I did not order any drinks, but will definitely be returning to check out the Elbow Room after Timothy’s recommendation to try the martini freeze.

I will be very excited to share this place with my friends and family. This was my first time at Paul’s and the experience definitely deserves 5 stars.

These folks blew our minds this morning. One of the best diners we’ve been to in awhile. Ambiance, service quality, food quality. So happy to have this gem in our neighborhood! Lisa, our server, was a pro and so kind from start to finish. We were with our kiddo and got the ship and grits, shrimp sweet potato hash, avocado toast, and their vanilla birthday cake as “brunch dessert”. Everything tasted so fresh, we can’t wait to go back. It’s great for a solo meal, with a group, or with kids.

Ate there today for the first time. Food was solid. Fried eggs were perfectly cooked. Wife said the beef stroganoff was the best she’s ever had.

Service was very attentive and efficient. I could tell that the waitresses have made a career out of serving. This is their profession and they do a great job.

Decor is a nice time-warp circa 1978 – 1981. It’s the real deal though, not faux retro.

As someone else described it in their review it is the kind of place Jim Rockford or Columbo would have eaten at back in the day. It’s very clean inside, however. All the old furnishings are nice and the place looks like it should be full of cigarette smoke but the air is very clean inside.

We decided on this place to celebrate my birthday. We were greeted at the door by an extremely friendly server who immediately took us to our table. He was attentive and knowledgeable, and so friendly and wonderful.
The food was fantastic. We had corned beef hash, and a mushroom omelette and dessert was fantastic. I took home a lemon pie and several biscuits that were all homemade. Just a wonderful experience and a fantastic atmosphere.
