Then when we opened our pizzas, they were so poorly sliced I can’t even begin to describe them! It looked like the individual who sliced them had never seen a sliced pizza in their life! The photos are examples. My wife and I were just very surprised, as this is not what we have come to expect.
Unlike the rest of Colley Ave., this spot has its own dedicated parking lot for Papa Johns and a few of its neighbors. Easy to zip in and out for pick up orders.
They do a good job with mask-wearing and not having any seating available inside. (The bench was turned around.)
Enjoy!
In the vast ecosystem of Norfolk’s pizza options, from local artisan shops to late-night delivery joints, Papa John’s sits squarely in the middle of the road. It’s not a culinary destination, nor is it a greasy-spoon guilty pleasure. It is, simply, Papa John’s. You know exactly what you’re going to get, and most of the time, that’s a perfectly acceptable, if unexciting, pizza experience, earning it a solid three stars.
The ordering process, whether by app or phone, is a well-oiled machine. The deals are frequent and often compelling, making it an easy choice when you need to feed a family or a group without breaking the bank. You click a few buttons, and like clockwork, a pizza arrives at your door. In terms of sheer convenience and predictability, they’ve perfected the formula.
The pizza itself is the definition of consistency. The crust has that familiar soft, slightly sweet quality, the sauce is distinctively sweeter than most, and the toppings are distributed with corporate precision. The real star of the show, as always, is the tub of garlic dipping sauce and the lone pepperoncini nestled in the box. Let’s be honest—sometimes you’re ordering the pizza just for the sauce. It’s a reliable, standardized product that tastes the same tonight in Norfolk as it did last year in another city.
However, that unwavering consistency is also its biggest weakness. There’s no local character, no special touch. It’s a pizza engineered in a boardroom, and it tastes like it. The ingredients are fine, but they lack the fresh, vibrant quality you’d find at a dedicated pizzeria. It satisfies a need for sustenance but rarely sparks any real joy or culinary satisfaction.
Ultimately, Papa John’s is the beige sedan of the pizza world. It’s a safe, practical, and utterly predictable choice. It will get you where you need to go, but you’ll never be thrilled by the ride. For a quick weeknight dinner when you don’t feel like cooking, it’s a perfectly adequate three-star solution.
