Edit: After calling, no refund available since I was not able to return to show them the sandwich therefore they couldn’t confirm for themselves. Was polite in telling me I was wrong at least.
I got one the other day, it was like I made it myself. Friendly, clean, expert sandwich assembly is what you’re in for at this subway if he’s working.
I don’t even bother going there unless Mason is on shift.
This young man has a bright future.
Behind the counter stood Mason. His name tag gleamed like a talisman. His eyes, dark and knowing, locked onto mine. “You seek a sandwich,” he intoned. It was not a question.
I nodded, feeling suddenly small.
Mason moved with precision, selecting ingredients seemingly at random—an olive here, a single shredded lettuce leaf there. He placed exactly seven jalapeños, whispering numbers under his breath. The toaster beeped, but it sounded more like a warning than a signal.
“Would you like it cut in half?” he asked, staring deep into my soul.
I hesitated. What was the right answer? What would happen if I said yes? Or worse… no?
In the end, I simply shook my head. Mason nodded approvingly, as if I had passed some kind of test. He wrapped the sandwich, but before handing it over, he placed his hand on mine.
“Eat wisely,” he murmured.
I left that Subway a changed person. The sandwich was, undeniably, the best I’ve ever had—but more than that, it meant something. I still don’t know what. But I dream of Mason often. And in my dreams, he is still making sandwiches.
5 stars. Would return, if I dare.
