Social Profile:

The origin of the Horse & Hound Inn long predates the American Revolutionary War. While 1749 provides the earliest known record of the house as an inn, it was build as a homestead prior to this date. It served as a mason schoolhouse, a gin and rum mill, and also a state coach stop on the Old Post Road from New York City to Danbury. The adjoining building served as a blacksmith shop for servicing guests, horses and travelers along the Post Road. Since early times, the quiet charm of south Salem has changed little. As a landmark in the community, the Inn retains its peaceful atmosphere. In keeping with the tradition, your hosts Susan and Silvano Vales have tried to maintain the Inn’s natural beauty. We hope you enjoy your visit with us.

Once a stagecoach stop, this historic tavern still welcomes visitors for American fare & drinks.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this charming little restaurant. Everyone was very happy with their meal. (My salad dressing was a bit sweet for my taste but it was a sweet style dressing; overall I was impressed with this place.) We were looking for a restaurant near where my daughter rides and I was so pleased to find this great place right around the corner from Echo farm! The staff couldn’t have been kinder and the drinks were delicious. We will definitely be going back. (I was surprised that someone commented about the portion sizes; ours were certainly more than sufficient but I know America is a “supersize it” nation where unhealthy amounts of food are often expected. The portions here are definitely generous and would be enough for most people!)

It’s a charming find on an out of the way street, my son and I go every month to catch up and it never disappoints. Call us semi-regulars. The food is fine, typical pub fare with a few surprises, well executed. We eat at the bar, Sam and Frank are the best!

The Horse and Hound is a gem. If you appreciate sincere, old-timey spots with care in their cooking and depth in their pours (and limitless coziness in their walls), you need not look a step further. This is the kind of place that all bar/restaurants should strive to be.

It was our first time. The food was not up to our expectations. The service was good though, our server was very polite and accommodating but that can’t save the food situation. The duck dish was particularly not good.

A bit too dark for me. Otherwise, everything was very good. Pleasant staff and food was delicious.

Charming location, but the vibe from the staff was tired and indifferent.

The patio is a beautiful setting on a summer evening, but they somehow were out of almost all of their draft and bottled beers on a Thursday. No problem, we settled for watery lagers and appetizers. None of the appetizers were very good and the service was slapdash at best.

Haven’t been here in a long time. Came down from CT heard they had some outdoor seating. Tables were nicely spaced apart and servers were amazing.

As for the food. A lot of the stuff was fresh from their garden but the fresh mozzarella salad was amazing. The tomatoes were so tasty. I had the stuff shrimp and everything was perfect. The stuffing was crab and it was cooked just right and it wasn’t overly seasoned or salted like many places do. It was definitely cooked to order.

Had an amazing time and amazing food can’t wait to go back
