The Wooden Spoon was originally built and created by Ted and Mary in the early 1950s, being called Ted and Marys. In 1977 Steve Bann, who was Hungarian, bought it and renamed it The Wooden Spoon, which means Good Luck! Since 2021 David and Jody Mertzke took over and have been renovating it to be the great diner it has always been… Always the same great food considering our great Chef Alex and most of our staff have been at the restaurant for over 15 years!
Small, bustling breakfast & lunch diner with a quirky vibe & many wooden spoons on the walls.

The server was super nice and it’s a super cute little restaurant, but I just didn’t enjoy the food like everybody else did. The eggs seemed very wet to me, the bacon had a flavoring that I just wasn’t a fan of, and when I ordered hashbrowns, I basically got uncooked pieces of potato. They tasted like Chinese food. I can’t explain it. We wouldn’t eat here again to be honest, but like I said, they’re very nice people and the restaurant itself is very nice.

Great breakfast. And fast! Very popular, which is always a good sign. I had the French toast, which I enjoyed. I got it with the fruit option and it was covered in fresh blueberries, strawberries, walnuts, and bananas which really made it awesome. Very busy place, go early.

Best breakfast we had out of several staying in Marathon for 2 weeks. Had the 2-2-2…The eggs were cooked perfectly, The pancakes were great, and we ordered the bacon crispy and it came out wonderfully crispy. Fast service. Lots of people in there so get there early to get a table.

Five Stars Isn’t Enough.
On a spontaneous trip to Key West, we decided to overnight in Marathon — and what a lucky move that turned out to be. Our original breakfast spot wasn’t open early enough, so we took a chance on The Wooden Spoon. One word: WOW.
From the moment we walked in, the service was warm, attentive, and genuine — the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. But the real star? The food.
We tried the homemade banana bread French toast — and I’m still dreaming about it. Perfectly caramelized on the outside, fluffy inside, and packed with real flavor, not just sugar. Every bite was a throwback to comfort food done right. You can tell everything is made with care.
This is the kind of place that feels like home, but better. A true five-star gem in the Florida Keys — don’t miss it.

Really good food and very friendly service. Thank you to Marie for that. Portions were more than ads but not overwhelming, which we appreciated. Two eggs were actually just two eggs! The home fried potatoes were brilliantly seasoned with just a pleasant kick. Very good prices for the keys. $9.00 for eggs, toast and potatoes.

This is one of the most unique brunch places I have ever been too. It’s a first come first serve restaurant but they are fair when it comes to who was there first.
Maybe 15 tables inside with like 12-15 bar seats.
All the food is cooked to order, it took maybe 20 minutes to get our food from sitting down to our food arriving . He pancakes were soooo good, sweet but not overly sweet, I got the egg white omelette and it was delicious, filling and cooked just right with all the meats tucked inside
The biscuits are huge and flakey the sausage gravy had the perfect pepper flavor.
My daughter loved her waffle. Perfect cook on the bacon, and scrambled eggs.
I would eat here over and over again!!!!
You get a lot of food for the perfect price too!

Stopped on the wooden spoon for breakfast. The coffee was good. I ordered the corned beef hash with two eggs and grits. My wife’s choice ordered a cheese mushroom spinach omelette. The food was outstanding the grits were some of the best I have ever had. I would highly recommend. The chef on the griddle is the boss of this ship!

We had the awesome opportunity of eating at the Wooden Spoon a couple times during our stay in Marathon. After reading reviews I went with the biscuits and gravy, delicious! The home fries were sooo yummy! Breakfast was fast and our order was correct and no leftovers! It’s cramped and loud, but seeing all the employees interact with the locals was warming. We sat at the bar on one occasion and watched the grill master at his best. He joked with us and we enjoyed his company. This establishment is so fun! The employees put their heart into this place, you could definitely feel their passion for service!

It is cramped and gets busy so go early BUT they immediately clean tables and keep tables moving and have a bar area that gives a little extra seating not clearly seen when busy. Our server knew the menu options, brought our coffee quick and was friendly and welcoming. Our food came out so fast!!! Hot and fresh and exactly as ordered. The food was good, not greasy, the potatoes had great flavor and were crispy on some edges and soft inside, the omelet egg was cooked perfectly, not overdone or dry. I would eat here again and recommend.
