Bar Wa Izakaya is as much a bar as it is a place to eat. With two bars and comfy lounges, a deck outside with a wood heater and al fresco tables out the front, it’s a great spot for a drink or two, in all seasons. We have a fully stocked bar to cater for all tastes, with a strong focus on Japanese beverages.
Cool, buzzing Japanese eatery whipping up izakaya-inspired dishes, plus a large sake list.

Really good variety of Japanese drinks too, including sake, whisky and cocktails that pair well with the food. It’s the kind of place where you want to order a few dishes and share.
Service was friendly and efficient, and the whole place just feels well run.
Definitely a must-go if you’re in Hobart and enjoy Japanese food — one of those places you’d happily come back to.
The share plates were outstanding. Between two of us we ordered the Kosho Granita and Sanbaizu oysters, Eye Fillet Tartare, the Grilled Yellowtail Kingfish Belly, and the Shiro Miso Braised Mushrooms. Every dish was amazingly delicious, but the oysters were the absolute highlight of the evening. The rich flavour and freshness of the Pacific oysters, paired with the beautifully balanced dressing — full of flavour yet light and not overpowering — made them perfect. Probably the best oysters I’ve had so far!
Oh the cocktails, the food and the atmosphere were very vibrant and bold. The cocktails list was an extensive one and their liquor collection is rich with options.
The staff were pretty amazing; cool, interactive, caring and beautiful.
I recommend this place. I’ll be back again!
For dinner, I ordered the grilled beef with uni and shiso leaf. Unfortunately, the combination did not work well. After finishing the dish, I could barely taste either the uni or the beef — only the shiso leaf stood out.
The chicken karaage was extremely salty. I am a Japanese chef and have worked in several Japanese restaurants in Sydney, so I was quite disappointed with the karaage here.
The yakiniku platter was not worth the price.
The best dish of the night was the smash potato crispy — a simple dish but very well executed and delicious.
The yellowtail kingfish was acceptable, nothing special.
The yukke was fairly good, but not outstanding.
I also ordered the Wa Bar Fu salad and kimchi. Ideally, these two side dishes should have been served earlier, but they were brought out almost at the very end of the meal.
For dessert, I really enjoyed the shiro miso ice cream and the yuzu tart — both were excellent.
Regarding service, one staff member told us that all dishes would come out consecutively, while another said everything would be delayed and served randomly. I believe the team should reconsider which dishes need to be served earlier or later to better build the guests’ appetite and overall dining experience.
The ramen had a robust, deeply satisfying umami flavour, the pickled octopus absolutely hit the spot, and the beef tartare was beautifully balanced — all the flavours just melded and worked.
There’s an expressive sake and Japanese beverage/cocktail list if you’re feeling adventurous, but they’re also happy to make your usual if that’s more your style.
Warm hospitality, standout food, and a great atmosphere. Definately recommend for something different
The drinks selection is impressive, especially the Japanese whisky range, and the team clearly put real thought into their offering. Dinner was delicious, well-executed, and served with great attention to detail.
Overall, this is a standout spot for anyone looking for quality food, great drinks, and an unforgettable atmosphere. Highly recommended.
The whole place is highly recommended and rated.
Great Japanese food overall
One letdown: ramen is only available at lunch — would love to see it on the evening menu too.
Karaage chicken – 5/5, crispy and spot on
House-made pork gyoza – 5/5, absolute winner
Sake paddle – fun experience, but turns out I’m not a big sake fan 3/5
Sparkling Chardonnay – decent, nothing special, 3.5/5
Go for the food. Worth it.
