I visited Morton’s in San Francisco to celebrate my birthday, and while it was a solid meal, I left feeling like it didn’t quite hit those high-end “fine dining” notes I was anticipating. Having experienced the Morton’s locations in Chicago, I think my expectations were set a bit higher for the brand.
The Food & Drink
• Chicken Christopher: The crusted chicken was flavorful and well-prepared.
• Au Gratin Potatoes: A classic side—cheesy and dependable.
• The Bread: Always a highlight at Morton’s; warm and fresh.
• Espresso Martini: Well-balanced and a great way to kick off the night.
• The Birthday Surprise: They were kind enough to surprise me with a complimentary birthday dessert, which was a very thoughtful touch and much appreciated!
The Atmosphere & Service
• Ambiance: The noise level was moderate—loud enough to feel lively, but not so loud that we couldn’t talk.
• Service: Our waitress provided average-to-good service. She was professional, though it didn’t necessarily feel like the elevated, attentive service you’d expect at this price point.
Overall Impression
It was a good birthday experience overall, but it felt more like a standard upscale dinner than a true fine dining event. Coming from the Chicago area where the Morton’s standard is quite high, I was hoping for just a little bit more “oomph” from the SF location. It’s a decent choice, but it didn’t quite exceed expectations.

This was very difficult to rate any place this low, especially with a name like mortons, but I have to be honest. From the moment we walked in it was one thing after another. We couldn’t get seated, and the bar had no real organization. We finally got a spot at the bar and couldn’t get not 1 bartender or server to even greet us and offer drinks and a menu. After having to call out to anyone behind the bar for a half hour, we finally got water. If I wasn’t persistent we would have sat there an hour without help I’m sure. When we finally got a servers attention we ordered everything without even seeing a menu just to get something to eat. We ordered steaks and baked potatoes, but we received mashed potatoes instead that were so hot that I burned my mouth on the first bite, they had to have been microwaved to get that hot. It took another 30 minutes to get someone’s attention to bring us what we ordered. No one ever asked how the food was or to even refill the drinks we ordered. I notice that any person sitting at the bar had to yell to servers to get any help or to even pay? Mortons has a name to hold up to, and sadly it only seems to be living on its name and not its level of quality and service, and I think that’s sad to say about its great history and name. I know this place can do way better, but it needs a better system and better organization to bring it back to its prime we all expect from Mortons. I hope my review start a revival, and returns to the way it used to be!!

Had a lovely relaxed night at the bar. Justin waited on me and suggested some nice options. The Shrimp Louie wedge bites and Filet mignon sandwiches were a perfect pairing. Although the filet did not come out as expected he quickly put in another order and made sure I was not disappointed.
Great late night spot in the square!

The food is always amazing and great portions! It’s à la cart which I love because I don’t have to waste sides while I come here out of town. Ribeye here is my favorite but when you want something much smaller the filet mignon is super tender and doesn’t disappoint.

Tip: sit in the bar area and ask for the special, I’m not sure but I think it changes monthly. For us it was the Champagne n sliders. I liked the smash burger option better but both were good. We also had the dessert drink chocolate cake martini I think n it was really good n boozy. Oh and if you eat the whole loaf of fresh baked bread and cream butteryoh won’t need anything else. I’d come back with friends for this again.

We came to celebrate my birthday. I commented on my reservation that we would be there celebrating for that event and they had a special happy birthday menu printed up and put little balloon confetti decorations on the table for us to make it more festive.

My husband had the NY strip steak, I had the white wine cream sauce chicken dish. Both were done to perfection. We ordered these sides; brussel sprouts, sour cream mashed potatoes, green beans. A big, round loaf of onion bread with whipped butter was given as part of the meal. We also had the crab cake appetizer.
I don’t prefer spicy food so I asked that the Szechuan green beans not have the Szechuan sauce on them. I ordered the truffle butter to drizzle over the green beans and it was absolutely magnificent. We used a little bit on the steak and on the mashed potatoes too. We mentioned that we were going to share the wedge salad and they split it onto separate plates for us. It was so good! The portions are all large enough to share between two people. We had the berries and whipped cream for dessert and it came with a little happy birthday chocolate on it and a candle. What a delight!

Our server was a tall, blonde guy named Mike. He was very attentive to everything we needed including special instructions for beverages. He even held on to our leftovers for us while we went to the theater just down the street for a play. Now that’s good service!

Excellent service and excellent food!

One of my favorite steakhouse chains in America. Steak and Lobster is always on point here. Lobster Ravioli hits different and everything here is spectacular.

I came to Morton’s as a regular guest, expecting a high-quality dining experience, but unfortunately, it was very disappointing.

I arrived around 9:25 PM and ordered an espresso martini, which was served. After that, I placed my food order at approximately 9:40PM. However, my food was completely forgotten.

I waited over 50 minutes without receiving my meal. By the time it was close to 11:00 PM, I still had no food, and I had to leave hungry. I only ordered one drink, and I couldn’t even finish it because I was waiting to enjoy it with my meal—which never arrived.

I spoke with a manager about the situation, and the only solution offered was a discount. While I appreciate the gesture, a discount does not make up for waiting almost an hour with no food and leaving the restaurant hungry.

I came to Morton’s for the first time to try it out and see what the experience was like, but this visit did not meet expectations at all. Forgetting a guest’s food and allowing them to wait that long is unacceptable, especially for a restaurant of this level.

Unfortunately, this experience has left me very disappointed.

The food is good. We went to Morton’s Taipei. But I prefer Taipei’s because here is so dark. I wish it could be lighter. And the waitress forgot to give us our bread to go.

I enjoyed every bite of my 12oz center-cut filet mignon—perfectly seared, tender, and cooked rare just as I requested.

The garlic-sautéed green beans and creamy mashed potatoes were delicious.

I had hoped for anchovies with my Caesar salad, and this time they arrived—thank you to the excellent server, Justin, for making sure of it!

The famous cheesecake was rich and decadent, served in just the right portion.

Overall, the entire experience was wonderful. Justin made my visit especially pleasant and memorable. Compared to my last visit years ago, Morton’s has truly elevated its service and quality. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming.

Morton’s Steakhouse is more than just a meal—it’s an experience worth savoring. Without hesitation, I give it a shining five stars!
