Simply exceptional.. these sandwiches are amazing! We got the meatball and turkey sandwiches on cheesy garlic bread. The flavors were perfect. Paired with Fitz’s root beer is a great combination.

The wait time was reasonable on a Monday during lunchtime. There aren’t many seats at this location but people came and went so seats opened up periodically.

You can order on the kiosk, but the staff were also friendly. I look forward to going back!

Moving my reviews off Yelp. I’ve been back a bunch of times. This place is an institution in St Louis. This was originally published 5/4/18:

I’ve had this place in my bookmark list for a really long time. I was in the area and looking for a sandwich so I pulled over and opened the Yelp app. They were the closest to my location so that’s where I went for lunch.

They were crowded – not a surprise according to other reviewers. I asked the dude taking orders my standard question in a new place: “what are the top 2-3 sellers?” He asked if it was my first time visiting their place. When I told him that it was he asked if I would like to try their house-made hot salami (temperature, not spice) and then proceeded to make me a 1 square inch sample sandwich. Good stuff! He then suggested a couple of sandwiches that include the hot salami and I selected the trio even though the whole concept of the “porknado” really was calling my name.

Here’s the description of the sandwich: Mortadella, Genova & Hot Salami. Served on Garlic Cheese Bread and Garnished with Pepperoncinis, Onions and Vinegar & Oil. “Cathy’s Favorite.”

I selected mozzarella for the cheese because it just felt like the right thing to do. I also subbed their house-made giardiniera for the pepperoncinis and somehow that made the guy assembling the sandwich smile a little. I asked…he said their giardiniera is his favorite and he puts it on every sandwich he eats there.

I paid at the register and realized there was not an open table anywhere. I did spot a guy sitting alone at a 4-top and asked if anyone was joining him. Nope – he offered me a seat. Full disclaimer: I’m a pretty big extrovert so this felt natural for me. Any introverts out there reading this review would cringe if I went on to describe the fantastic lunchtime conversation I had with this gentleman – a retired police office and resident of the same block where the restaurant is located.

All in all, a great meal. Here are some miscellaneous observations:

+ Their restaurant will be 100 next month. There is a lot of pride among the staff over that fact. I heard it from several.
+ The sandwich was nothing short of amazing! Crunchy bread that’s chewy at the same time, bountiful meats, slightly melted cheese, etc.
+ The giardiniera – a bit more mild than a lot of them but absolutely delicious.
+ There was a slight sweetness coming from somewhere in the sandwich that I never managed to identify but it made the whole experience just a little better.

Next time around…it’s you and me, porknado!

Absolutely worth it!!! I had their beef sandwich and it was incredible! Little indoor seating area but a quick turnover. Friendly staff.

I was skeptical about the hot salami sammich, but any and all concerns rolled down the hill faster than a snowball in February once I took the first bite. This is arguably the best sandwich in all of STL. Hot, melty and gooey with salami so soft that it could be confused for slow-cooked corned beef.

Stopped in earlier today and had one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had truly a 10/10. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. I will definitely be back.

This is my second time visiting Gioia’s and I had share the experience with some friends and family. This is what you would might expect from a authentic Italian neighborhood deli. Tucked in a neighborhood, you might miss it if you blink. Very friendly family feel. This has now become a tradition for us and already looking forward to our next trip back. I tried a spicy daggett (which was awesome) my son had the hot salimi again. The next time your pass through and hungry, I highly recommend taking a short detour , you will not regret it!!

Omfg this was my first time going and it is now officially the best sandwich I’ve had in St Louis. I scan the menu and notice a salami sandwich I’m interested in but then I notice a homemade chicken salad on the menu. I change my mind and go up to order. I order the chicken salad with lettuce, tomato, onion and Sriracha mayo. The charming guy taking my menu reminds me that they are known for their salami, not chicken salad. I don’t change my order and take it to go. On the drive home something happened to me that had never occurred before, I felt compelled to open that sandwich and dig in, so I did. Your chicken salad should be famous. It’s insanely delicious… perfect even. I devoured that sandwich and can’t wait to return for the salami one now. See you soon.

Gioia’s on the Hill for the win again!! On Friday I ordered the King Cod on the app at like 1:10pm, immediately after that, I had a delivery show up (window was 1-4pm). Called the restaurant to let them know I’d be late coming to get it, but I would be coming, so just let it sit. After the delivery, I got there at 2:15, she let me know that they’d make the sandwich fresh right then. She/the restaurant did not have to do that; she took an extra step to make sure I got a fresh sandwich and even apologized to me for the 5 minutes wait. In the meantime, I witnessed like 5 Door Dashers come to the window and the guy that was working the window was friendly as heck–you could tell he likes his job. Wherever you guys are getting this staff, keep it up and keep the staff–they rock!!
