This is easily some of the best Omakase sushi in town. Parking can be difficult, so I ended up parking at the DQ nearby. Regarding service: be sure to make a reservation, as they do not accept walk-ins. The seafood is incredibly fresh and tasty. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best sushi houses in the Vancouver area. I hope the owner is doing well. I was so sorry to hear that they will be closing soon.

Every time I’ve been here, I always get their omakase at the bar and the fish is consistently fresh and tastes amazing! My friends and I always have a great time here! I highly recommend this hidden gem and to try this place out soon since the owner will be retiring at the end of this year, so go while you still can!

Arrived here with three other close friends to try out their omakase menu. The omakase consisted of eleven different nigiri, each with their own distinct taste and texture.
The best nigiri in my opinion were the salmon, red snapper, and squid with the mackerel (even though slightly fishy) having a good flavour profile. Each of these had distinctions due to tenderness without a strong oceanic taste or fibrous chew. The o-toro was could be honourably mentioned as it was perfectly fatty but had a bit of a fibrous texture to it.
The pieces that fell short were the shrimp due to feeling a bit overcooked, scallop as it tasted a bit bland and not sweet, amberjack due to a oceanic aftertaste, uni due to a odd oceanic bitterness (could have just been the piece I had as my friends didn’t notice), and the hirame or flounder as it was a bit chewy with a very strong fishy taste.
Although there were some hit or misses, the overall experience was great and the service was fairly welcoming.
I was sad to learn this place is planning to close but I wish the owners the best and I am glad I was able to enjoy the freshness of the sea at this restaurant and thank Matsuzushi and the owners for providing me and my friends with this wonderful omakase experience!

I’ve loved this place ever since I discovered it. It’s a small, intimate spot run by an amazing husband and wife team.

Their omakase is incredibly fresh and delicious — and the price is unbeatable. The beef is also outstanding.

If I lived closer, I’d be here all the time.

My heart is broken to hear they’ll be closing at the end of the year. We’ll try to visit as much as we can before they’re gone.

Thank you, Chef Hataguchi and his wife, for all the wonderful meals and memories.

I was really disappointed with my experience here. When we first walked in, the restaurant smelled very fishy and felt extremely humid, which was not a great first impression. We ordered the $50 omakase set for two people, but the experience fell far short of expectations. It took about 10–20 minutes before anyone came to take our order, and then we waited roughly another 30 minutes for our food.

The service felt inattentive throughout. They would only fill our tea cups halfway each time, and they poured a very small amount of soy sauce into the sauce plate for us, which felt oddly stingy. The sushi quality itself was also poor. Each piece of nigiri had an excessive amount of wasabi, to the point where it felt like it was being used to mask the low quality of the fish. The uni was especially concerning—uni is usually a bright orange, but ours was a much darker orange and looked a bit old.

For what was supposed to resemble an omakase-style experience, there was no explanation at all about which order to eat the sushi in, even though there is usually a specific progression. The omakase also came with miso soup, which was quite bland and forgettable.

To make matters worse, my friend found a hair in one of the sushi pieces. Overall, the service was not good and the sushi was some of the worst I’ve had.

I came in genuinely wanting to give this place a shot, as I had heard many good reviews online and knew they are closing down this month, so I was really excited to try it. Unfortunately, the experience was ultimately very disappointing.

This is one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had. The ingredients are incredibly fresh – you can truly taste that clean, “from the sea” flavor in every bite. The restaurant itself is small and refined, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

What makes it even more special is the lovely owner, an elderly couple, who run the place with so much care. The chef personally thanks his customers one by one, which makes the dining experience feel very personal and heartfelt.

Sadly, he plans to close the restaurant by the end of this year as he heads into retirement. I’ll definitely be visiting a few more times before then to enjoy his amazing sushi again. A hidden gem that will be dearly missed.

Ordered omakase for lunch. Sushi was so good by master chef and they served misosoup.green tea was significant. Looked like no ventilation inside with a bit of hazy air. They are open until end of this year. Recommend try this sushi before closing permanently.

I really enjoy this place. My husband and I drive from Surrey to come eat here. We stumbled on this place one year after the loss of our baby, and make it out to eat at matsuzushi near her birthdate. I wasn’t able to get an rsvp before they close. I would love to leave a review! The sushi here is really good, I don’t think we will find another sushi place this good. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing feels homey. The service is great, even though they speak minimal english. Runs by 2 old couple, very sweet, everytime I come in serbice is always great! I am sad to see this place close, but I do wish the couple a wonderful retirement!

P.S. Very sad to hear that Matsuzushi will be closing / shutting down for good in December 2025. But also wish the owner happy retirement!

A fascinating establishment. Run by an elderly couple, it is one of a very few Japanese joints in Lower Mainland offering an old-school setup where it’s best to get seated in front of the chef and see him preparing food for you. Ingredients are exceptional. They offer fish that is very hard to find in other Japanese restaurants. Also, it is suitable for different budgets where you can get very affordable donburi and more common rolls, or something more exotic at a higher price. You shouldn’t expect quick service here, and there is no problem with that – this place offers a unique atmosphere that is more important than the speed of service. It might not be for everyone, but I think this restaurant deserves more attention.
