We had a really lovely experience from start to finish. The food was excellent, I had the scallops and fillet steak, and would highly recommend both.
We accidentally left some gloves behind, and the team very kindly sent them on to our hotel the next day, which was hugely appreciated.
Thanks so much to everyone at The Buttery. We hope to see you again soon.
Food was delicious and one of our party who works in another establishment said the choice was good as the food was excellent. The scallops were a good size, the version very tender . The cheeseboard was a lovely selection. The 2 servers who’s name o did not catch were very knowledgeable about the types of gins on offer .
They were very attentive to the group’s needs.
The antique cutlery and China add a unique twist and the temourus beastie thistle wall paper and tartan accessories let you know your in a very Scotland them restaurant.
I was very excited to go based on reviews and made a reservation 1 week in advance on a Sunday in November at 16:30. We were a table of 2 dining on a 2 course lunch menu.
It didn’t look busy, only a few tables but perhaps rest were reserved for evening diners? Service was slow, took 40 minutes for our starter to come! Thankfully we had a late brunch and were chatting away but it’s not acceptable for a quiet restaurant where we ordered one starter to share!
We were offered more bread to tide us over but 40 minutes is far too long to wait for one starter. Mains came around 15 minutes later after I chased. Joseph, our waiter was very apologetic and attentive thereafter- improved our overall experience.
Definitely believe service improved when started kicking off and we received two complimentary small tarts. Nice goodwill gesture and the mains were tasty but I think the atmosphere was a bit off. We were expecting more warm and comforting Scottish hospitality. But I found it hard to flag down waiters (there’s a fair few and it was not busy) and an aloof vibe. We were not charged service charge- perhaps our waiter waved it off cos he knew it wasn’t right.
I would not revisit again based on the food wait times and overall atmosphere. Food was nice though. Perhaps I visited on an off day or lunch menu diners aren’t a priority as I noticed the other tables receiving their food very fast.
If I had to offer a critique, I’d say the décor feels a little dated, and the location isn’t where you’d expect to stumble upon such a rare gem. With that said, these points become irrelevant the moment you experience what The Buttery has to offer.
The service was absolutely exceptional. In an age where genuine hospitality is becoming increasingly rare, The Buttery not only sets the gold standard but exceeds it. The staff were warm, attentive, and struck the perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. It’s clear they take real pride in making each guest feel welcome, and to this, I take my hat off to the team for delivering such a memorable and refined dining experience.
The food never fell short. Every dish was presented with care and cooked to a high standard, showcasing real attention to flavour and detail. Nothing felt rushed or overly fussy; just beautifully prepared, comforting food done exceptionally well. A special mention must go to the bread, which is made fresh in-house by their own bakers, which is an impressive touch that sets them apart from places that rely on mass-produced shortcuts.
The pricing was also fair, offering excellent value for the quality of both the food and the service.
In short, The Buttery was a true highlight of my trip and a top-tier recommendation for anyone visiting Glasgow.
To start, we were offered a slices of breads baked in-house: maple and harissa loaves & malted sourdough. All were delightful, especially the malted sourdough, which was honestly some of the best bread I’ve ever had.
Our mains:
1. The venison steak, served medium rare as recommended. It came with haggis, mash, broccolini, and a rich onion gravy. The venison was cooked perfectly, tender and full of flavour, and the haggis and gravy complemented it beautifully (nothing too unique, but tasted lovely). A classic Scottish combination done extremely well.
The portion was a little on the smaller side, so we added a side of cabbage and bacon (£6.50), which was creamy, comforting, and tasty, if not particularly unique.
2. The monkfish wrapped in bacon with scallops, was the standout dish of the evening. The monkfish was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, the scallops buttery and tender, and the crispy gnocchi added a lovely texture. The accompanying sauce, creamy and full of flavour with petit pois scattered throughout, tied everything together beautifully.
I wasn’t entirely sure the bacon around the monkfish added much, but it didn’t detract either.
Presentation for both dishes was excellent. Overall, a truly gastronomic experience with exceptional service from start to finish. No service charge was added automatically, but we were more than happy to leave a tip for the fantastic staff.
An elegant, truly memorable dining experience in Glasgow – will definitely come back anytime I’m in Glasgow again.
Note: would definitely recommend making a reservation! It gets booked up in advance, and lots of people having their birthday meals here, clearly a special place 🙂
From the moment we arrived, everything was top-notch. The menu is clearly crafted with care; the flavor combinations are complex, unique, and incredibly well-balanced. I ordered the venison, which was cooked to absolute perfection—tender, flavorful, and paired beautifully with cabbage, potatoes, and an array of sauces and gravy that brought everything together seamlessly.
My wife ordered the entrée-sized scallops, and she hasn’t stopped talking about them since. She says it’s the best scallop dish she’s had in her life, and I believe her.
Between the phenomenal service, exquisite food, and the antique environment, this was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough.
