The venue:
Really cute and cozy place with a great vibe. The décor is lovely, and you can sit inside or outside.
The food:
A bit pricey for being right in the center of Florence. Everything we tried was tasty and nicely plated, but the portions weren’t very filling and nothing really blew me away.
The service:
The dishes took a bit to come out, but overall the service was okay.
Overall:
I enjoyed the experience, especially the atmosphere. The food was very good, just not exactly what I expected.
We started with the boar Bolognese, which was incredibly delicious and full of depth. For our main course, we ordered the Florentine steak, which was cut and weighed specifically for us. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was easily one of the best steaks I have ever had. We also had the Tuscan beans, a simple yet flavorful dish that has now become a regular side in our own home.
To top off the experience, the owner generously shared a bottle of wine from his winery, making the evening feel even more personal and memorable.
Osteria Vecchio Cancello is truly special, an unforgettable meal and a place we cannot wait to return to.
I ordered a pasta and the T-bone steak and both dishes were cooked to perfection — flavorful, juicy, and generous portions. Everything from the seasoning to the presentation was spot on.
A special shout-out to the waiter Valentin — he was incredibly attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better with his great recommendations and warm service.
The atmosphere, the food, the staff… honestly couldn’t ask for more. Already looking forward to coming back! Highly recommend this place.
We had the cod risotto which was hearty and just what we needed, and the ricotta and truffle ravioli which was perfectly balanced without feeling overpowered by truffle. The steak, desserts and wine that we had was also amazing.
The service was perfect, we showed up without a reservation and the host (which we unfortunately didn’t get the name of) was honest that they were fully booked and about the wait time if any of their tables freed up. I would definitely recommend making a reservation for this place if it is your only meal in Firenze.
We also liked how the tables were spaced, and the calm jazz music in the background. This place is the opposite of a tourist trap, they care about the comfort of diners rather than trying to squeeze in tables for some extra profit.
An extra shout out to Valentino and David who were friendly and attentive waiters.
We asked for balsamic vinegar, which was served with the salad. Waiter A kindly drizzled some and left the bottle. Soon after, another waiter (taller man – B) came swiftly, took the vinegar bottle away, and put it back on the rack. Later, when my husband asked for a bit more, waiter B replied that the vinegar costs €50 and isn’t for bread. That really spoiled the mood — I couldn’t believe we were being told how to eat, especially after paying €16.50 for the salad.
Despite that, waiter A remained attentive. We decided to have tiramisu (though we were full) just to end the meal nicely. The food was hearty, and we spent about €90 for two, leaving a tip for waiter A for his good service.
I’m giving 3 stars — one for waiter A, one for the chef, one for the cosy ambience. However, please treat your diners with more dignity. For a few drops of balsamic on a paid salad, I don’t need to be told its price or how to eat my food. If it’s too costly to share, don’t serve it or list it as an extra on the menu. We’ve been touring Italy for a week and had lovely experiences everywhere, but sadly, this was the most unpleasant one.
The food was unforgettable. The bistecca fiorentina was hands-down the best I’ve ever had – perfectly cooked, rich in flavour, and truly a dish to remember. The pasta was equally delicious, and the house wine paired perfectly with everything we ordered.
But what really set this place apart wasn’t just the food – it was the service. After three weeks of travelling across Italy, this was the only restaurant where the staff actually smiled warmly. They were genuinely friendly, welcoming, and made us feel at home.
If you’re in Florence and want the full experience – incredible food, authentic atmosphere, and service that makes you feel like family – this is the place. Easily the highlight of our trip and a restaurant I’ll be dreaming about until I return.
Thanks Samir and Valentin,
