What a wonderful place. Our bartender Cody was superb. We are new to the bourbon scene and he had so many helpful pointers. Had a regular old fashioned and one with Pepsi added (it is the birthplace of Pepsi lol) Brisket tacos and fish tacos were great. Potato salad was to die for. Sit at the bar for an awesome experience.

I had not your usual ” Shrimp and grits”, I would call it deconstructed since each element was cooked on its on and then put together. Ok. The fried shrimp was good. The service was good. It feels a bit old and not taken care off.

Great food and great service. The pretzels are amazing. I’ve had the regular (LARGE) pretzel and the bites with pimento cheese. Both were amazing.

Totally blown away by the history behind this unique, historic restaurant and gathering space! The menu intrigued us “military brats” (from the British military term “BRAT,” which stood for “British Regiment Attached Traveler” and referred to families who accompanied soldiers on overseas assignments). The owner pays homage to his grandfather’s military service. There are plaques on the backs of chairs acknowledging contributors to a Wounded Warriors fundraising project. The eclectic decor–replica dog tags definitely reflect a nod to and honor fallen soldiers and first responders. The food was delicious and prepared as ordered. The boneless chicken bites were delicious! The G.I. Joe burger was cooked to perfection. Ample-size portions, some suitable for sharing. Whisky and bourbon aficionados will not be disappointed. Great selection of rotating NC beers on tap. Shout out to the warm, friendly staff… especially server Amanda. Thank you, Manager Tosha, for taking the time to stop by our table to ask if our meal was alright and answering our questions about the unique collaboration Poppy’s has with Maker’s Mark Distillery. We have already highly recommended Poppy’s to friends. We look forward to returning.

This restaurant was great from the beginning to the end of our experience. The Manager/Bartender came out to price checked some items near the entrance btw I forgot to get the glass cup near the register. The Fish & Chips were good, fried golden brown with a hint of seasoning. No salt or pepper needed. My burger stole the show. If, you want both breakfast and lunch, order the Reveille Burger! Fried egg, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and hash browns comes on this big burger. Don’t forget the onion rings that were golden brown and crispy. I have no complaints. The food took awhile to come because the place was so busy, it was worth the wait. Let me add that the lettuce was so fresh. Just a lovely experience. Even got me a pre-birthday gift. Ice ball mold Drink with the meal was The Old Fashioned & Pepsi

I dined alone and upon arrival was given a 20 minute wait time, turned out to be 30 but I was famished and committed. No big deal, I waited.

The restaurant had a very busy dinner rush and the staff was noticeably moving around with a purpose and also provided their apologies for the wait.

Considering the situation, I ordered what I perceived as the easier menu items, Candied Bacon and “The Beast” burger. Admittedly, both were a let down, especially the bacon.

The bacon came out COLD and baked way too long, like made in the morning and sat around all day cold. The “candied” part was far from that and consisted of just sprinkling of brown sugar. The presentation was nothing short of poor. The portion was considerable but definitely did not outweigh the other factors…. But, I ate it because once again, I was famished (8hrs of travel here) and I had no idea when or if I’d get something else in a reasonable time considering the busy atmosphere.

The burger wasn’t cooked to my liking. I asked for medium rare because of the meats involved and how dry they can turn out, but I received a medium to medium well. It also did not taste anything like the description. The sweet potato fries (side) was the shining star and the dip was complementing.

I would not order either item again.

The best part of the evening was the staff. Especially the hostess, who was seemingly doing more than hostess duties. I seen her clear tables, bring chairs from upstairs to make table seating, get water, refill waters and she also got my check for me. It’s not to say the others weren’t doing anything, but the young lady was certainly putting in work.

I’d slightly consider giving this place another try if nothing else was open but most certainly would not be during any busy period.

I really wanted to like it, but it left so much room for improvement.

I just picked up some take out from here because it’s next to my Airbnb. THE SALTED CARAMEL CHEESECAKE IS AMAZING! The restaurant is beautiful and the hostess that served me was perfect..she even brought me a fresh drink after my short wait. I’ll probably have to go back tomorrow on my last day in town. I walked By yesterday with my pup and people outside said there was quite a wait for a table..well aside from It being a Friday night, now I know why.

This was by far the best food we have had in New Bern since we’ve been living here the last couple of years. We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The wait before we were seated was about 30 minutes, but absolutely worth it.
Service was good. Restaurant is Veteran/armed forces themed based on the founder of the restaurant and his service. One of the TVs in the bar area was rotating cute animal videos (the others were on sports, of course). It was actually refreshing to be in a bar and have something cute or funny on one of the TVs.

We were seated at a high top table in the bar area and the door to the restaurant kept blowing very cold wind in so we were freezing at our table which is really the only reason for 4 stars for atmosphere.

I highly recommend Poppy’s for your downtown New Bern dining!
