Ruby Slipper was unfortunately a pretty disappointing experience. I would only recommend it if you have just landed at the airport and do not have time to search for something better.
To start, the beignets were mid, which is about what you would expect from a diner-style spot. They seem to be on the menu because of the area’s reputation, but you can tell locals are not lining up to order them.
The highlight of the meal was the French toast bites. Even though they came out lukewarm, the flavor and texture were solid and easily the best thing we tried. The hot honey chicken biscuit came in second. The biscuit itself was cooked well and the honey was nicely balanced, but there was no real heat. The chicken breast was overcooked, almost as if the oil temperature was too high, leaving the outside too hard.
The fried green tomatoes were under seasoned, possibly not seasoned at all, and the breakfast potatoes were extremely overcooked. They were hard, lacked seasoning, and tasted like straight griddle char.
The salmon omelette was underwhelming and could honestly be made better at home by anyone who takes cooking somewhat seriously and has access to fresh eggs. The pancake was decent, but if that is what you are craving, you are probably better off going to IHOP.
The sweet heat chicken and French toast bites were also poorly executed. The French toast tasted nothing like the appetizer version, and once again, the chicken was overcooked. The Spanish omelet was better than it looked, but it still could have been prepared with more care and flavor.
On a positive note, our waitress was amazing. She knew the menu well and provided great service. Although we did not follow her recommendations this time, she was easily the best part of the experience.
The only reason I might give it another try is the possibility that I simply ordered the wrong items, but based on this visit, it is not a place I would go out of my way to return to.
On top of this, they do not know how to cook a poached egg. I do not recommend getting any of the Benedict’s. My first two poached eggs were overcooked with set yolks. I asked for additional poached egg and they were also overcooked. No runny yolks 🙁
Lastly, I was served unwashed spinach that literally had mud on it. If I knew how, I would let the health inspector know they need to come visit here.
If you were wondering if they have improved since the last one star review about a terrible chicken st. charles, the answer is no.
We went on a Saturday at 10 am and was full.
For the kids they give you a paperwork and crayons.
We ordered Milk, coffee, capuchino, french toast new orleans styles, white chocolate pancakes, buttermilk pancakes, eggs, etc.
Everything was delicioso, the people very kind.
The place including the restrooms very clean.
I recommend here
