Happen to come across this restaurant on our first day in Malta as we arrived late afternoon, was a good choice. A good seafood dishes, pasta and shell fish to choose from. Service was good and friendly. Food ordered was excellent. Good portions and flavorful. Prices are bit high depending on what you order. Wine and spirits available. Atmosphere is nice . Overall very good.

On recommendation of some friends we visited this restaurant. The service was very nice and well organised. The prices were reasonable and fair and the food tasted delicious. We had lobster pasted and it was very good and also so fried calamari I could highly recommend and also the gamberi Rossi I loved them. We even came here twice and it was very worthy. A place really recommend

Dinner at L’Ostricaio – A Celebration of the Sea

If you love seafood, L’Ostricaio in St. Julian’s is one of those places you shouldn’t miss in Malta. It’s not fancy in attitude, but it takes its ingredients very seriously — fresh, simple, and treated with respect.

I started with fresh oysters on ice, served with just lemon wedges. No extra dressing, no fuss — the way oysters should be. Clean, cold, and briny, they instantly transported me to the sea.

Then came the red prawns, raw and incredibly sweet, sprinkled with sea salt and edible petals. They were rich and delicate at the same time — the kind of dish that makes you pause after the first bite.

The tuna tartare was another highlight. Perfectly diced, topped with a touch of wasabi cream and tiny kiwi cubes that added freshness and balance. A creative touch that worked surprisingly well.

I also tried the carpaccio di pesce, served dramatically with the fish’s head still on the plate — a reminder of how fresh it was. Thin slices, dressed with olive oil, lemon, and a hint of sea salt. Pure and beautiful.

Then came the warm dishes — spaghetti with lobster in a tomato and garlic sauce that was full of flavor without overpowering the sweetness of the lobster. A classic done perfectly.

Finally, grilled lobster salad — light, colorful, and fresh. The meat was tender and slightly smoky, paired with crisp vegetables and just the right amount of lemon.

The atmosphere at L’Ostricaio is relaxed but vibrant. You can sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare the seafood right in front of you — no pretense, just honest cooking. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, and the wine list complemented the food perfectly with a strong local selection.

What I appreciated most is that nothing felt overcomplicated. Every dish celebrated freshness and simplicity. You taste the ocean in every bite.

If you’re in St. Julian’s and want to experience seafood the way locals love it — fresh, raw, and full of life — L’Ostricaio is the place to go.

-1 star because it’s hard for the restaurant to cater to requests for spicy food. They offer you chili oil which isn’t great for me because it takes away the foods natural flavors. Most restaurant I went to during my stay in St Julian’s just offer me fresh chopped chili.

We stumbled upon the restaurant on a night out and enjoyed the food so much we went back for lunch.

Atmosphere was great staff were nice and friendly too.

Food was delicious – I ordered ‘linguine with king prawns and cherry tomatoes’. Good portion, even though I wished the portion could’ve been slightly more.

For the drink, I had the passion spritz without alcohol, tasted incredible.

Great service, would recommend!

I tried L’Ostricaio in Paceville, St. Julian’s. The food tasted good, so no complaints there. However, the prices felt higher compared to other restaurants nearby offering similar dishes. The staff behavior was a bit awkward and not very welcoming, which affected the overall experience. Good food, but the service and pricing could be improved.

I had the linguine with mussels as a starter and as the main course the sea bream dello chef. Both were good and the latter served with potatoes. On the table was also an absolutely delicious olive oil perfect to dip in with bread. The waiter suggested a very tasty light sparkling Italian wine to go with all this. Overall enjoyed this meal.

The freshest and best-grilled sea bream I’ve possibly had in my life (and I really like fish!). They also offer to debone the whole thing for you, which is such a bonus. Service was friendly and unintrusive, and they really pulled through with a last minute birthday cake request for my friend’s birthday.

Super yummy Italian wine too – we ended up having 2 of the same!

Thank you for a fantastic dinner.
