In August for my mother’s birthday, we had to wait 40 minutes for our table (with a reservation) and had mediocre service and was served bread that was icy in the middle. It happened to be on “National Steak Day” so they were busy and we gave them the benefit of the doubt that it was just a bad day to have a reservation.
This Sunday, for my dad’s birthday, we had to wait 10 minutes after our reservation to be seated and were seated in the bar with crumbs on chairs and water on plates. Several parties of 2, 4, and 6 showed up after us and were seated immediately on the restaurant side, but not us. (Mind you, we picked Sunday to avoid picking Friday/Saturday night when people would be dining for Valentine’s.) The A/C was blowing and our whole party had to wear winter coats though it was in the 50s outside. I would understand if it was in the 20s. It wasn’t the nice start we expected.
We waited about 10 more minutes until a server came to take our drink orders. He was fine, but didn’t really offer the level of service we used to expect at a steakhouse type restaurant. An assistant, who didn’t greet us, sat down waters and bread, but just waited for us to move our menus on the small table to make room for the bread. Literally no words spoken, just stood at us and stared waiting for us to get a hint that our small table was too small for bread with menus on the table.
I noticed we got the plastic cup of butter instead of metal you get on the restaurant side. The bread wasn’t frozen at least, so I’ll give them that. Due to the lack of ambience and feeling so casual, my mom and I settled on sharing bar food since we were in the bar. It didn’t warrant ordering appetizer, steaks, etc as we had planned. It no longer felt special and we were resigned to just suffer through it.
My husband and dad each ordered a salad with different dressings. In the past the servers have brought two salads tossed and welcomed sharing. Not this time. Plastic side cups of dressing and one salad that really wasn’t enough for both of them to share, when they ordered salads separately.
My mom and I didn’t receive the same treatment we would have gotten in the Harry’s Patio side of the restaurant. Pre-split entree with separate fries/condiments/etc. Instead we had to share it between us with an extra plate. It felt like the bare minimum.
We wouldn’t have minded this experience as much without a reservation in Harry’s, but having consistently having a better experience there, I recommend just going to Harry’s upstairs or downstairs. No reservation needed or failed expectations. The restaurant side seems like a myth of the past.
Even with two of us sharing a meal, we spent $150+ on 3 entrees, 3 beverages, and 2 salads before tip. The value was not there.
