Delivery was smooth and right on time, and the food arrived fresh and well-packaged. Overall, a great experience from start to finish. We’ll definitely be ordering from Merritt’s again!
Stopped for a dine-in lunch at Merritt’s Grill in Chapel Hill before driving home to South Jersey. Just as we remembered from our time living in NC, the quintessential BLTs are filling, served on sourdough toast, and loaded with fresh lettuce , tomato , and crispy , with just the right amount of (Duke’s?) mayo.
I was tempted by the tuna salad sandwich , which was huge (see menu pic attached), but that’ll have to wait ’til next time.
I did order the classic Banana Pudding for dessert. It was smooth, creamy, and delicious. Not too heavy, not overly sweet. Just the right portion, and a good deal at $3.95.
The service was very friendly to every customer that came in, including us. (And I even had a Duke glass with me…a violation when in Tarheel Nation, I know! )
The atmosphere is an old, converted gas station ⛽ that no longer serves gas, but rather “The Best Food in Town” per the sign above the Pick-up counter. Having lived down here for nearly 10-yrs, I can’t disagree! There are some dining tables inside, patio seating outside in front, and more picnic tables (covered) outside in back. Parking is tight, given the food quality, fair prices, service, and long-standing tradition that keeps customers coming back.
If you’re new to the Research Triangle, just passing through, or a local resident who hasn’t discovered this Southern culinary gem, treat yourself to a tasty BLT, banana pudding, and some of the “Best Food in Town” at Merritt’s Grill in Chapel Hill!
The only real challenge was the size. This sandwich is incredibly thick, the kind of thick that makes you wonder if you should have practiced jaw flexibility beforehand. Next time I will go with a single since I have heard those are far more manageable for anyone who is not blessed with snake level jaw capabilities.
If anything could be improved, I would love crisper lettuce, a lighter touch on the mayo, and a bit more bacon. Even with those tweaks in mind, it was still a tasty and satisfying BLT, just one that might be a little too ambitious in its double form.
Very busy but efficient, we were greeted immediately, provided a menu and ordered all within 5 minutes. Definitely would return again when visiting the area!
They have several versions and all of them include ample amounts of deliciously cooked bacon and some of the juiciest tomatoes. I got mine I’m with guacamole but you can add all kinds of other toppings.
The place was totally packed but the line moved incredibly fast and the food came out quickly. This place knows how to handle a full crowd, and you can tell they have been doing this for a while.
Between the delicious food and great prices I’d be happy to come here for another bite. They also have some cool desserts I’d like to try out next time.
