Gateway Diner: a taste of pure joy.
From the second we stepped inside, the vibrant energy of The Gateway Diner hit us like a wave. The buzz of families, the inviting aesthetic, and a lightning-fast greeting made it clear we were in for a special experience. Our waiter, Jordan, then took things to another level. With incredible positivity and infectious humor, Jordan transformed a lackluster morning into a truly amazing afternoon. This wasn’t just a meal; it was an event, and the first impression was spot on.
Our culinary journey began with the sensational Loaded Nachos and Jordan’s perfect suggestion: the Loaded Fries. Both dishes were a masterpiece of flavor, piled high with perfectly seasoned beef, melted cheese, fresh tomatoes, onions, and a zing of pickled jalapeños. The crunch and flavor were absolutely immaculate.
Next came the main event. The classic BLT was anything but typical—a true bang for your buck in both size and flavor. As for my Gateway Panini, it was a flavor explosion. Loaded with turkey, corned beef, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocado ranch, and tangy coleslaw, every bite was a testament to fresh, perfectly prepared ingredients.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Jordan’s final suggestion arrived: a slice of the house-made Oreo Cheesecake. This dessert wasn’t just a treat; it was a revelation. It melted in my mouth, each bite a perfect balance of savory and sweet. I devoured it as if it were my last meal, every bite telling a story of pure indulgence.
I absolutely recommend a visit to The Gateway Diner. This culinary gem, located at 899 Central Ave, Albany, NY 12206, has been an Albany staple since 1971. It blew me away, and I hope you have the same unforgettable experience.

Food was very good, and portions were nice too. It was really busy, but the wait still wasn’t too bad. I also really like the cool retro architecture.

Thanksgiving morning, 9:30am —OPEN!!
Passed by 3 other diners that said they were open but not. Even McDonald’s was closed.
But on our way to the supermarket, saw many cars parked in front of here so pulled in to spy customers inside!

Ordered their 2 eggs specials, one with ham and another with sausages. Both were delicious! The ham 3-4mm thick and steak-width round. The 2 sausages were not the tiny links but real sausages. The eggs were fried beautifully and you could tell they were good eggs, very pretty and well sized.

Our waitress was prompt and attentive, topping my coffee as she noticed it was low. The design of the curvy wood beams were unique and organic adding to the friendly atmosphere. (Tell me what style of architecture you think it is?)

Happy Thanksgiving 2024!!

This diner has a large American food menu and there is something to please everyone. I had the chicken parmesan paninni and it was good. Their French fries are especially crispy golden brown.and delicious.

Went here for a late brunch. The service was very nice an welcoming. The food was a bit bland. Had to add lots of salt and pepper to the eggs and corned beef. But all in all it was a good time.

Tonight I’m at The Gateway Diner

Ordered: Monte Cristo with both melba and syrup ( I wasn’t sure which I would like better )

My son got
Pancakes, egg, bacon & sausage.
Once he put some salt, pepper and hot sauce on his eggs, he was ready to eat. He demolished his food.

My sandwich was okay. I think the ham was a little too salty so it threw it off too much. Would get again but with just turkey.

Def a lot of meat tho. Served with chips.

Side note: shout out to whoever told me to use real maple syrup.

I just added a lil bit from home and I actually think I like that combo better than the Melba

Meal: $11.99 Base
Up charge for bagel (60 cents) instead of toast and added cheese ($1.45)

Two eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee.

I had to remind the Male waiter that the OJ came with the meal. He never refilled my coffee; not even once. He did not even come back to drop off the bill.

I did tip him 15% which was $2.10

Will not be returning.

I was debating on writing this review however after seeing some recent terrible ones I can no longer keep my mouth shut. Normally I go here with my Boyfriend however we decided to visit on January 18th & had a terrible experience. There were like 3 waiters yet one who we never seen before shouts “Sit wherever you want. What do you want to drink?” Like that should of been the red flag for me however it was two other servers coming up asking if we wanted to be helped. They kept forgetting condiments. The HUGE concerns for me is how the one little girl whose skinny with Brown Hair conversates unprofessionally with Customers. It was a snowy day and this Elderly regular came in & asked her how are you doing and she proceeded with “The Weather is SHITTY” like girl I’m trying to eat… Same girl was gossiping with the other employees because a takeout order called for an $80 order and they were furious accusing them of not tipping and they didn’t even pick up the food yet. How do I know this? I could hear the whole conversation. FYI: Tipping isn’t Mandatory!!! The final straw for me is when the same little girl cashed us out and before my Boyfriend got the chance to sign, she took her greasy finger and just scribbled where he was supposed to sign like I kept my mouth shut because I didn’t want to make a scene. You need to teach that girl customer service skills then maybe she wouldn’t have to worry about working two jobs and getting underpaid.

Delicious food, fast and friendly service. Best grits I ever had and their homemade hash was very good too, I don’t normally like hash, but this one was very good. My husband had the Denver omelet and said it was the best one he ever had. Kids had pancakes, eggs and side of bacon and sausages. The bacon wasn’t the best, but the sausages were good. We were able to have dessert right after breakfast, that was fun. Great prices too.

So I was meeting ppl at gateway diner January 17th so the host sat me down where my table was I asked for a glass of water she said that she was not my server and said my server be there in 15 min but after a few minutes the host brings me water like come on. The server was miserable she was rude she rushed a lot of us and some ppl were late but she shouldn’t have rushed any of us. So I ask if they had fruit punch and they did but when she brought my drink over it was not fruit punch it was orange and I said this is not fruit punch she said it’s tropical fruit punch but it didn’t taste like that so then I asked for lemonade and when she bought that over the lemonade had way too much pulp and I didn’t drink that or the fruit punch. My food I ordered was spaghetti and meatballs and the meatballs didn’t taste good and the sauce was soupy and the sauce was disgusting. After the service We all had we won’t be going back there. A lot of us didn’t leave a tip and everything was so bad.
