The pizzas are the true highlight. We shared a large Roman-style pie with a beautifully thin, crisp crust that still had a lovely chew, exactly what you hope for in a “Roman” pizza. Fresh, high-quality ingredients are clearly at work: bright tomato sauce, fragrant fresh basil, and toppings that taste as though they’ve been chosen with care. Many reviewers highlight how the dough is light but flavourful.
Service deserves praise too. The staff were friendly, efficient, and clearly proud of the food they serve. One reviewer noted that the menu was presented in multiple languages, and the staff helped effortlessly despite us being non-Portuguese speakers.
The location is a plus: nestled in Alfama, it feels like a genuine neighbourhood pick rather than a purely tourist trap. That said, like any good spot in a popular district, it’s worth arriving a little early or booking ahead. The quality you get justifies it.
My only minor reservation, one or two reviewers felt the toppings were lighter than expected on certain pizzas, especially compared to pizza standards back in Italy. But for me, the combination of crust, ingredients and service more than makes up for it.
In short, if you find yourself in Lisbon and craving pizza done well, especially with a Roman-style twist, Pizzeria Romana Alfama is a strong choice. I’ll happily return next time I’m in town.
This used to be our favorite restaurant back in 2021, during Covid, when we lived in Alfama. We ordered pizza from Romana at least once a week.
The pizza was consistently excellent, tasty and of high quality and the suppli as well. Their selection of beers as well.
In spite of having eaten at numerous pizza places all over the world, including Italy, Romana remained a benchmark for a high quality pizza experience for us.
Unfortunately, revisiting in November 2025, after almost five years, was not the dreamy, nostalgic experience we had hoped
The place looks the same but all the prices have pretty much doubled which completely ruin the price to quality mix.
Paying 16-17€ for a pizza in Portugal is kind of outrageous.
Moreover, the quality has dropped significantly. The ingredients were of cheaper quality.
The dough and pizza crust were thinner and did not have the bubbles anymore. Their selection tomato sauce had been diluted and not the same splash as it used to. The toppings were scarce and not plenty like they used to be.
We used to get fresh and plenty of real Parmagiana flakes on our pizzas. Not anymore. Now it is some weird shredded cheese that did not taste of much. Used to be fresh and plenty parsley on the pizza. Now it is some scarce, dry parsley. Etc.
To sum up, everything had gotten super expensive while the quality of the food had been diluted as if to maximize profits just before exiting to some venture capital fund.
We were super sad to experience this as it has tainted our otherwise great memory of a favorite pizza place which is now no longer existing.
I would not recommend this place as it not good value for money nor a great gastronomical experience. It is just a money pit living off the previous good reviews.
Unfortunately, not how it used to be.
I would highly recommend.
Great high quality ingredients deliver amazing dishes.
