Straight disgusting. While I love trying new places, it was embarrassing to be served food this way. The cucumber salad literally looked like they pooled other people’s left overs together and the seafood dumplings were all dough, exceptionally soggy with a whiff of seafood. Can’t even comment on the chili dumplings. If you’re looking to diet- come here you’ll lose your appetite immediately.

8/29/25: this particular Friday we visited Happy Bao’s for the first time after work; we arrived around 5:30ish. We left happy & stuffed – with leftovers!

Food? I don’t like seafood or onions, so it’s sometimes a challenge for me to eat at Asian restaurants. Luckily, I was able to enjoy some tasty items from Happy Bao’s. The food came out hot, it was extremely colorful, and everything was delicious.

Service? It’s a very small place inside the restaurant (if you suffer from claustrophobia, think twice), but there was a small table or two immediately outside their door. It’s in the Mekong Market so if you’ve been there, you know there’s a pretty large dining area located in the food court. The few staff we spoke with were polite & quick.

Ambiance? Nice. They had some cute decor on the walls, though I will say the floor near our table was a bit sticky. Considering the amount of traffic (a lot of customers were simply picking up orders) — plus how full & busy it was — I imagine it’s difficult to find the time to clean the floors.

I would totally visit Happy Bao’s again, though probably for take out vs dine in.

Seems quite popular among the locals. This busy place is located inside the Mekong Plaza. The dumplings we had were good except the filling is rather on smaller side. The cold noodle Liangpi was just okay. Or as flavorful as the dumplings. Overall the service was fast. Reasonable prices.

Craving some asian food, my partner and I decided to try Happy Bao after seeing a few videos about it. We ended up getting the Touchdown combo, which consisted of Pork Sheng Jian Bao, Xiao Long bao, honey ribs, wontons, dumplings, and fried rice for $60 before tip. This ended up lasting us a few meals at home too, so for the value, it was a nice combo that allowed us to try a bit of everything we were curious about.

My partner and I both agreed the honey ribs and the fried rice were the best dishes out of this combo. The ribs were soft, flavorful, and I honestly wish I had more for the price. But with it being part of the combo, it was fine. The fried rice is huge (see picture), and is actually pretty good. Not just “soy sauce” flavor you might taste at some other restaurants. It paired well with the rest of the dishes.

Our next favorites were the XLB and the wontons. The XLB came out hot/fresh, and the soup/meat inside were flavorful. We paired it with both the XLB and the other dipping sauce they provide. We both felt the XLB sauce was way more vinegar-y than we liked, but the other sauce was more better balanced. The wontons (the ones with the yellow wrap) were much better flavored than the dumplings (the ones with more pinkish wrap).

The dumplings were probably our least favorite. It didn’t have that much flavor and lukewarm at best when we ate it.

Of note, both the wontons and dumplings come with chili oil all over. As someone who likes spicy food, this definitely can be spicy for people, so be careful! It paired nice with the fried rice in this regard.

Lastly we got Pork Sheng Jian Baos as part of the combo. The bottom is nicely crispy and pan fried, which was a nice change of texture. The bread itself is kind of bland (tastes like pan fried bread), but the meat inside is flavorful. I liked eating a bit of bread with the fried rice and some of the chilli oil or ribs to make a more well-rounded bite.

All that to say, if we were to come back, I think the only things we’d for sure try again are the fried rice, the honey ribs, and MAYBE the XLB. I think the combo is still worth it to try if you’re curious about the menu and want to make your own decision for it.

My first time here was amazing! I ordered 3 dishes and they were all so delicious and flavorful (especially the chicken soup dumplings). Will definitely be coming here more often. The staff was also very kind and accommodating, give this place a try!

We had garlic bok choy, Vegitarian bao and vegetable chow fun. Everything was delicious- but we especially loved the chow fun. It was flavorful, smoky and delicious! I would love a few more vegetarian bao options, but what I did have was delicious!

Great Bao / dumpling restaurant located inside Mengkong plaza in Mesa.

We have been here a couple of times. Often stop when we drop by Mengkong supermarket.

This is a great little restaurant serving fresh made dumplings, soups, noodle & rice dishes as well as Bao (steamed and fried).

Once you eat one dumpling it’s hard not to eat 10 more.
We suggest going with 4 or more people. Order a variety of dishes and eat family style. The xiao long bao (soup dumplings) are worth a try. We also like the bok Choi and Choi sum.

Well. We like everything on the menu. Wish I had four stomach’s so I could eat more!

It’s a great restaurant serving authentic Chinese (not American Chinese).

We lived in Asia (hong Kong and singapore) for 22 years and we miss the food greatly.

Happy Bao does a great job of replicating the real thing. And it’s clean, has friendly and attentive service and is in a comfortable environment.

I finally tried Happy Baos and I’m honestly so impressed. The soup dumplings were AMAZING full of flavor and perfectly made. I also had the spicy beef noodle soup and it was out of this world, so comforting with just the right amount of spice. On my way out I grabbed a chai tea and it was the perfect finish to the meal. The service was incredible, super welcoming and attentive. Definitely a spot I would recommend if you’re looking for good food and a great experience!

Ughh I wanted to love this place so bad but I left sooo upset ! We’re on a little trip here and it’s a little stressful to think of places to eat cause you only get a few and you don’t wanna waste money and a night on something bad but we did just that. The soup dumplings are so floppy and so bland. The top is thick and like almost crunchy and the bottom you can’t even pick up without ripping. The broth is so fatty/oily. The dough for the dumplings is so weird idk how else to explain it. We ate it all because it was 50$ but if I didn’t care about the money I wouldn’t take another bite. I honestly absolutely hate leaving bad reviews but it’s been 4 hours and I still feel so sick so it’s kinda hard to just ignore.I wish the din tai fung had been open already.
