The Bear Pit has been around the San Fernando Valley for over 60 years! Many of our regulars have been eating here since they were little cubs. The founder of the Bear Pit developed the unique barbecue sauce and slow cooking methods that we still use today. We like to keep it authentic, with quality Missouri Style wood smoked meat smothered in our delicious secret recipe BBQ sauce. If you haven’t had the pleasure of eating our BBQ Sandwich on garlic cheese toast, drop by the Bear Pit and find out why our homemade BBQ sauce, cole slaw, and garlic toast have kept mouths watering for so long.We have added numerous menu items including beef back ribs, baby back ribs, Louisiana Hot Links, soups, salads and other things to satisfy any taste.

Slow-smoked meats are served alongside a wide variety of traditional sides in a rustic setting.

The Bear Pit BBQ has been a staple restaurant in our family for as long as I can remember. Things have changed over the years, but they still provided excellent service. The restaurant still has the same decor & paintings on the walls that I loved so much as a child. The menu is generally the same, with a few additions/changes. The first thing both myself & my brother said when we walked in was “there’s no more sawdust…” growing up that is how our parents/grandparents knew what restaurant we were talking about when we requested to eat at the place with the sawdust on the floor.
The fried taters aren’t as good as I remember them being as a kid, but I just believe I have outgrown the fascination of them. I ordered the Grizzley Bear Combo; which included 2 BBQ meats & 3 sides of your choice. I have always been a fan of their BBQ Turkey. My brother got the Lamb Sandwich on Garlic Toast & my Boyfriend got the Bear Pit Cubbies; one pork, one beef one turkey.
They serve each table with a cold plate of carrots, pickles, celery & Peppers; we ordered a side of taters and ALWAYS get the Shirley BBQ Sauce. We even got a bottle of sauce to go. It has been over 4 years since the last time I visited the area so taking some home with me was a must.
The Bear Pit will always hold a special place in my heart and bring back so many memories. Things haven changed over the years but their food is still delicious and their service is great.

We initially stopped at cocos for a late breakfast early lunch but there was a pretty long wait. As we were walking up we smelled some delicious BBQ and decided to eat here instead. We ordered the ribs and chicken combo, I definitely liked the ribs better but the chicken was still pretty tasty. We also ordered the Cub burger which was a pretty large size for a kids meal, also very good. We got onion rings, fries, coleslaw, baked beans, and an order of pickles, all delicious! And we also got a slice of the tuxedo cake with our coffee. Everything was very good and I am happy we came here instead of Coco’s! Our server was also very nice!

A little gem hidden in the arm pit of the Greater Los Angeles valley. Come here when you want a good roast beef sandwich. The food is above mediocre with it’s cafeteria style food and darker ambiance. Plenty parking.

A friend and I were passing through town and decided to stop by for lunch; no regrets! The smell from outside was enticing, and we weren’t disappointed. The staff were professional yet friendly, and the food was nommalicious.
Don’t expect high-end cuisine, but rather a family friendly / bring the buds and watch the game kind of vibe.
I would absolutely stop here again!

Good ole’ bbq. This is my favorite spot. Lived in Missouri for some time. They have 2 sauces, both are good but i prefer the darker sweet tangy Damn finger lickin! Beef ribs are cooked excellent every time and the touch of smoke is perfect flavor addition. Great job see ya’ll soon.

Decent hole in the wall family type place. The pickles & carrots sitting out was not to my liking (do they pass on the uneaten ones to the next table?) The meals were great other than the Mac n cheese, which some may like but for me it tasted like overcooked macaroni with processed cheese (store brand box would have tasted better). Garlic bread was great. Bathroom needs updating. Service was okay.

I do apologize in advance if this review doesn’t feel good, but being from Kansas City, Missouri I feel obliged to speak up after trying the shredded pork on garlic bread with coleslaw, baked beans and a mini carrot with a side of their sauce. I told the buyer and flyer that if they didn’t have any burnt ends I was gonna pass, but they brought me the aforementioned in a well secured plastic to go container entirely unmindful of the fact that I am a native KCMO Chiefs fan and smoked a brisket for the 4th of July all day and can’t brag enough about how we do BBQ. And you folks out here in SO CAL don’t know any better but The Bear Pit should, and therefore ought to be ashamed of themselves for claiming their BBQ is anything like how the folks in Missouri do it, and do it regularly in their own back yards, at the American Royal, at Gates and Sons, Arthur Bryant’s, Jack Stacks, and Joes KC BBQ to name just a few. We don’t stand up when the east coast is craving Philly Cheese steak Sandwiches, or Brooklyn Style Pepperoni Pizza because we KNOW better but I take it The Bear Pit assumed they were a safe enough distance from Missouri for anybody to call them out on thier B.S. (and that doesn’t stand for Barbeque Sandwiches but it might as well.) I can’t even believe that the pork in my sandwich was smoked. Was suspect from the start when they failed to provide burnt ends off a smoked brisket on the menu. The garlic bread left me scratching my head until a very unflavorful bite explained everything except why the red stuff in the to go cup is perpetrated as barbeque sauce. If you know, you know. If you don’t, it’s not your fault and it’s just wrong. I will put my life’s savings on the present owner having NEVER stepped foot in Missouri. SoCal’s got Baja Tacos, Sunshine, Sand, Newsom and traffic jams-they don’t care about what they don’t have and it’s okay. Bear Pit- We live in the Woke ages now. That means your in the right place at the wrong time.

One of the best bbq place I have been to in CA, just above average for Missouri though. Had the brisket sandwich and a few ribs both were good, the potato salad was great though. Prices are a little bit high but hey it’s LA what else do you expect.

raditional AMERICAN BBQ cuisine which leaves plenty to be desired. The place is properly decorated to resemble a bear pit, with pictures of bears everywhere. Not my favorite, but it works for the place.
It was my first time and my friend, who recommended the spot, wanted to order her favorites for me. You are given pickles, celery and carrots as a free appetizer as you wait for your food.
We had Turkey sandwiches on garlic bread, chilli, sausages, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and iced tea. Before I even get to the food, I must say the place was empty and near closing so I feel like our food wasn’t freshly made, especially the garlic bread, so this significantly contributed to the food quality and overall experience.
The macaroni was just awful and overcooked. Think mushy cheese. The Turkey sandwich was bland and the hard garlic bread didn’t do it any favors either. I surprisingly liked the chilli, which had a smoked thing going for it, and the sausage was pretty good as well. After being disappointed with the food I nearly lost my mind when the $90 bill arrived. I DO NOT comprehend the cost associated to such lackluster food. Our server was tired and cleaning up so we had to wait a bit to track her down. This was a little disappointing as the food was pretty cold to begin with. I must say that the hostess and the server were nice people, and I APPRECIATE that tremendously. Overall, this was my first and definitely my last time eating there. I had high expectations and left with bubblegut. Definitely not worth the money or sacrifice of tastebuds.
