Great spot for lunch on our way into Bar Harbor for the day. Helen’s offers a homestyle dining experience with traditional Downeast meals at affordable prices. The variety on the menu ensures everyone in the family can find something they’ll enjoy.
We had the clam strips, haddock burger, BLT, Caesar salad, and the lazy lobster. Everything was fantastic and full of flavor. We also took a slice of the homemade blueberry pie to enjoy later on our whale watch cruise, and it was absolutely delicious.

Downeast Institution! This place was super. So did you order seafood, no I did not. In a homage to its orgin story, I ordered a hotdog. A red hot on grilled bun. I may have violated the cardinal sin of putting ketchup on it. Yet, I feel as though something compelled me, maybe a Mikumwesuk? Anyways perfect with grilled marks and scored. The accompanying French fries were crisp. Still on this tour were my two guests. Guest one had a crock of French Onion soup. These said it was warm and perfect broth. The cheese was not greasy. No emulsion breakdown, just a fine melted layer. My other guest had a piece of Blueberry Pie…Can I use slab, it was a good size piece. The server told my guest that it is served cold, but the server offered it warmed up.
The service was super fast. I could hear the server at other tables. My listening to her working knowledge of the menu, showed how good she was at her job. She was able to answer if the soup was cream or milk based. Really impressive!
As we left, one of my guest surprised us with cookies. We were each given a peanut butter cookie for us to take to the hotel for a later snack.
Helen’s is a must if you are down east. The specials and the other desserts in the case looked so good. I did not surcome to the dollhouse pie they had!! Super grade A+ experience. I will return!!!

I was in town for business. I stopped at lunch time and they were packed. I soon found out why. Belle is a member of the family and an absolute rockstar server. She took such good care of me. The food is top tier and I don’t just mean for a family restaurant. The lobster was cooked to perfection. The baby red mash potatoes season exquisitely. The seafood chowder was so rich and filling. And to top it all off the blueberry pie was…. To steal a their tag line… don’t diet pie it. Completely satisfied guest here.

My daughter was finished with her lobster stew before we ever got our meals (lobster roll and scallops). Then, the first bite of lobster roll was shocking, because the meat was ice cold, but it did come with an extremely large quantity of melted butter. For the price, it certainly wasn’t what we expected. The lobster stew was the best tasting, but it was $45; I guess we should have asked the price before ordering that one.

Food was okay, albeit not very well seasoned. Seafood chowder needed salt, but the parmesan crusted haddock was pretty good. Steak on the salad my girlfriend ordered was ice cold. Where this restaurant shines is in the desserts. The blueberry pie warmed with vanilla ice cream was excellent.

Thursday night in Ellsworth and Helens was the happening place in town! We waited about 10 minutes to be seated but our server was with us immediately! Our Irish nachos appetizer came out quick, fresh and hot. We had the country fried steak (A++) and the chicken Parm (C-) with great sides! But the lie is what you are coming for! The blueberry pie is MAGNIFICENT! Our service was great, the bill was reasonable, and there is plenty of parking available!

Great restaurant, family type place. Not fancy, but service and food is really good. had combo plate, delicious. Came back 2 days later and had the lobster roll and fish and chips. Tons of deserts to choose from. We were here on vacation. I thought the prices were reasonable for the quality of food..

Always a good stop when vacationing. The food is so good and filling. You definitely need to get one of their fantastic pies to go. There’s no going wrong with anything on the menu.

Just like having dinner at grammie s, some very yummy food and they have everything from hot dogs to seafood, now wrap your brain around that. Now here’s the kicker there was a 20% gratuity added to the bill which almost went unnoticed and we only had 4 adults. Here’s the second kicker, our waitress was barely worth 15% so keep your eye on the bill. Because there are plenty of other great restaurants around the sneaky gratuity will make this restaurant a no return for us.

What a gem of a restaurant!! This was some of the best food we had on our trip to Maine. The seafood chowder was delicious. I had the open faced Ruben with a baked potato and pickled beets on the side. The baked potato was perfectly cooked (crispy on the outside and soft on the inside) and one of the best I’ve ever had. Really affordable place. The kids meals were perfectly portioned and came on cute kid plates. Really kid friendly. Great service. Tried their pies at the end of our meal and we were not disappointed. Highly recommend and look forward to returning next time we are in the area.
