I lived in Tucson for two years and never tried El Charro, and it was well worth it. My carne seca chimichanga was excellent, and the rice and beans were very flavorful as well. The complimentary chips and sauce were great. The service was fast and excellent. The waiter even let me sample the meat before ordering the entrée. The checkout was seamless because you could pay with Apple Pay on your cell phone. The indoor decor was well decorated, and the background music was pleasant. The outdoor seating area was very scenic with the Santa Catalina mountains in the background. The price is not cheap, but it is well worth the experience of an iconic Tucson restaurant.

This was me and my buddies first real meal after being at a music festival for 4 days straight.. the cheese dip was absolutely incredible. The complimentary salsa is a slapper as well.. the heat builds as you go. I had the surf and turf fajitas. Well worth it and delicious. One of my boys was absolutely buzzing off a nice dose of M and still mopped his birria enchilada. I think the servers name was Jayden. He was pretty cool too. 10/10 spot. Would recommend.

Let’s start with the food because, wow! I have been disappointed with a lot of the Mexican restaurants that I used to love since deciding to be a vegetarian. This was my first time at El Charro, however, and I was optimistic by the number of vegetarian options on the menu. I had the vegenchiladas, which are made with chickpea chorizo. I loved them so much. The perfect flavor.

The service was just as impressive. There wasn’t a long wait for our drinks or food and we never ran out of chips and salsa. The person that took our order made sure I didn’t have an allergy when I asked about an item and was very knowledgeable about the menu.

Prices were very reasonable for how great everything was. Maybe a new date night. The atmosphere is perfect for that.

Editing to add pictures because I had to come back for those vegenchiladas. Mmmmm.

Atmosphere and service were ok. Save your money if you are looking for good food. I had the worst looking michelada i have ever seen. The food looked amazing but all three plates were lacking. We paid and went to eat elsewhere.

El Charro Café downtown was out of this world. It’s difficult to say whether I liked the atmosphere or food better! They were both 5 stars! The wait staff was ‘on it’ and I can’t wait to return. The authentic quinine was to die for.

Conversely, We tried the El Charro on N Oracle and our waiter was stretched too thin, or just forgot us. I had to flag down other waiters for assistance and did notice that the tables around us, who had other waiters, were served well and quickly. They all turned over at least twice.
When we had a waiter get OUR waiter, after waiting 20 minutes or longer for the bill, I politely let him know that the service and follow up had been disappointing. The food was good but he was covering our one table on the patio and more tables inside. Other than taking our order, he was done with us. Hopefully it was a fluke.
Back to downtown El Charro. Five stars! It was beautiful.

The El Carne Seca Chimichanga at El Charro Cafe is a true taste of Sonoran tradition! It’s a very unique dish that I’d describe as an acquired taste—delicious, but definitely on the salty side. The flavor is incredibly authentic and speaks to the centuries-old method of preparing the meat. It pairs wonderfully with a cooling drink, and the mango-jalapeño margarita was the perfect choice, balancing the rich, savory meat with its spicy and sweet notes. A truly memorable meal and a great experience.

Just had my first experience at El Charro Cafe. Decided to stop in for an early dinner while out running errands. Can’t speak on the food as I was never served. I arrived at 4:30pm on a Sunday. It wasn’t busy, there were maybe 8-10 tables of customers but plenty of employees standing around the bar chatting. At 4:47 I left because I had not been so much as greater, acknowledged, or even offered a beverage. I watched several other tables have their orders taken and drinks brought to them. No one would make eye contact or acknowledge me. 15+ minutes of being ignored despite attempts to make eye contact and flag down different servers. Really beyond disappointing. Feels oddly personal.

The atmosphere and vibe here are great, lively, welcoming, and fun. The food, however, could use more flavor overall. The tacos in particular aren’t quite authentic Mexican and fall a bit flat.

Intimate setting thru out. We were seated in the basement! Not what I expected. Turned out to be very comfortable, private, and on the spot service. I seldom like to pay top price for regular Mexican food, but this food was exceptional and worth the price and service.
Will definitely return on my next visit to Tucson.

Always loved El Charro. The Oro Valley location is much more convenient but also more “OV”, which despite the fantastic atmosphere, isn’t the original. If you’re craving signature El Charro dishes, but the wait is over an hour downtown, head up the street to the Oro Valley location. Food is delightfully on point. Ask for a to-go box in advance, lol. You’ll need it.
