Usually the parking lot here is very packed on Sunday afternoons, but Silver Tower Restaurant next door was closed for vacation, so it actually ended up being pretty empty the day we ate here for lunch.

We got the Special Bento Box (Chicken Teri-Don, Deep-Fried Gyoza, Assorted Tempura,- sweet potato, shrimp, eggplant, Assorted Sushi – salmon, tuna, ebi, California Roll, and Tuna Maki), as well as the Spicy Chicken Karaage Don, and Matsuyama Roll (chopped scallop, tuna, salmon, cucumber, tobiko, avocado, prawn tempura). Bento Box comes with miso soup.

Out of the dishes we ordered, I enjoyed the matsuyama roll the most, but everything else was sort of just standard compared with other Japanese restaurants I’ve been to previously. Nothing fancy or noteworthy in terms of decor or seating either.

The restaurant closes in between lunch and dinner hours, so they do gently hint for you to leave once you’re finished eating.

The assorted sashimi bowl now has noticeably less sashimi than before, and I’m not sure if that’s why they changed the bowl. The new bowl is oddly shaped and very slanted, feels more like something used for display photos than for actual dining. It’s not practical at all; the food easily slips out, so you have to eat very carefully. The rice is also mushy and unpleasant, almost like leftover rice. The overall quality has dropped a lot.

The food is good and the seating is comfortable, but the prices are on the higher side. Even for simple items, it can get quite expensive. The only downside is that the wait for food can be a bit long. However, the staff are friendly and polite, which makes the overall experience better.

Decent place for late sushi dinner as it opens until 11pm. There are a variety of items to choose from, such as sashimi, nigiri, rolls, cooked items, and more.

The parking can be quite tight as there are quite a few restaurants in this small mall.

I do find the cups generally have a strong bleach smell .. they can probably clean them without using so much chemicals. You can always request for another one that doesn’t smell as strong.

I went to check out the restaurant. Parking was challenging in the area. My stomach was okay after eating but the oyster motoyaki was a little greasy for me. Food was good otherwise.

Ordered takeaway that included the salmon sashimi shown in the photos. I discovered what appeared to be a parasite (worm) inside the salmon. I immediately called the shop, but instead of taking it seriously, they tried to downplay the situation, denying and claiming it was “normal muscle” in the salmon.

However, as seen in the photos, normal muscle fibers are short and flat, while parasites are long, string-like, and slightly translucent or milky, exactly as shown.

This is completely unacceptable food handling and service. I had already eaten two pieces before noticing it. I have reported the case to Vancouver Coastal Health to ensure proper food safety inspection and to help protect other consumers.

I usually come for the late night menu.

A typical spot for no frills late night sushi.

Depends when you go, sometime there is a little bit of a wait. 10-30 minutes usually.

Not much to say about the service, food are usually pretty fast. Servers are always available and quite easy to wave down. A pretty decent no frills service.

Food are a hit or miss, but generally not bad. There are only a couple things that I didn’t like. Some dishes are fair pricing and some have gone up and are on the more expensive side. Also, depend what dish it is, some portion are generous, and some are a bit lacking.

I do like their chopped scallop cone, beef short ribs, sunomono, temura, and their nigiri is generally pretty good.

Parking are hard to find though.

One of the best bentos you’ll find in Richmond! The quality can vary a little depending on whether it’s a slower or busier day, but honestly, it’s always worth it. For the price you pay, the portions and quality are unbeatable.

It’s been a family favourite for years, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for great value and delicious bentos!

It was a random find during my visit to Vancouver. Their food and service were excellent. The casual and going vibe with the late night menu fare is unbeat for a midweek outing.

(Highly recommend the grilled salmon belly)

I’ve been coming to this place for about twenty years now that the staff and I are on first name basis. It’s very hard not to love this place. Service is friendly. Food is consistently good. Price is reasonable. For me, having Japanese food in Richmond is synonymous with eating at Matsuyama. Five Star Rating.
